Position Duties

This is a student position responsible for meeting the daily emotional and physical needs of children in an assigned classroom. Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. 

QUALIFICATIONS
The minimum education required for admittance as a student at Stephen F. Austin State University.

No direct experience is required.  Training and instruction will be provided.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Greets parents and gathers information about the child.
  2. Supports teachers as necessary and provides children with tasks, supplies, projects, food, and/or snacks as needed.
  3. Tends to children’s needs and interacts with them.
  4. May launder children’s clothing as needed.
  5. Cleans, sanitizes, and disinfects toys and equipment as needed.
  6. Provides activities for children (i.e., outside play, walks, trips.)
  7. Fills out and files accident reports as needed.
  8. Completes other necessary paperwork as required.
  9. Cleans respective room and “play yard” as assigned.

NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  1. Assists with special projects as assigned.
  2. Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  1. Knowledge of general office and clerical procedures and concepts.
  2. Ability to accurately prepare and maintain records and files.
  3. Ability to communicate effectively with children, parents, university faculty & staff, and the general public.
  4. Ability to create projects for children in their classroom.
  5. Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  6. Ability to operate equipment such as thermometers, dishwasher & dryer, and telephone.

Minimum Qualifications

All ECHL employees must complete 24 pre-service training hours per child care licensing requirements, obtain CPR certification within 30 days of hire date, and pass criminal background and fingerprint checks. Training resources are provided.

Other Qualifications

A student must be enrolled in six or more semester hours to be eligible for student employment during the fall or spring semesters. To be eligible for student employment during the summer, a student must be enrolled in three or more semester hours or be registered for courses in the upcoming fall semester.

Student assistants may not hold any other type of position such as a graduate assistantship or temporary casual employment at the same time that they are employed as a student assistant.
