Job Description

Calgary Co-op is one of Canada's largest retail co-operatives, proudly serving members across Calgary and area. With a diverse portfolio spanning food, pharmacy, gas, home health, and wine & spirits, we're committed to delivering exceptional value and community impact. We believe in putting members first — and that starts with the talented people who make it happen.

Opportunity

The Senior Director, Information Technology is a pivotal senior leadership role within Calgary Co-op's digital and technology organization. Reporting to the SVP - Digital, Member & Information Technology, this executive owns strategic and operational leadership across five key domains: Infrastructure & Network, Cybersecurity, Engineering, IT Operations & Service Delivery, and IT Governance, Risk & Compliance.

This leader bridges long-range technology strategy with disciplined day-to-day operational execution — a rare combination that is essential in a complex, member-owned retail enterprise. You will partner closely with Senior Vice President and peer business leaders to translate Calgary Co-op's strategy into actionable technology roadmap, while ensuring the reliability, security, and scalability of the systems our members and teams depend on.

This is a hands-on senior leadership role that demands both credibility on the whiteboard and accountability at the delivery level.

Key Responsibilities

  • Infrastructure & Network - Oversee the full lifecycle of enterprise network, server, and hybrid cloud infrastructure — balancing on-premises reliability with scalable cloud platforms — while driving automation, IaC adoption, capacity planning, vendor management, and ensuring robust DR/BCP readiness.

  • Cybersecurity - Define and lead the enterprise cybersecurity strategy, governance, and risk posture — overseeing IAM, threat detection, and incident response teams — while ensuring regulatory compliance (PCI-DSS, SOX, PIPEDA), managing third-party risk, and communicating security posture to executive leadership.

  • Engineering - Lead software engineering, enterprise architecture, and platform teams across core retail systems (POS, ERP, eCommerce, loyalty) — driving Agile/DevSecOps practices, API-first design, architectural standards, and disciplined portfolio management in partnership with business stakeholders.

  • IT Operations & Service Delivery Own the enterprise ITSM function — including service desk, incident, problem, and change management — driving SLA governance, ITSM tooling maturity, major incident response, and continuous improvement of service delivery across all cooperative locations and users.

  • IT Governance, Risk & Compliance - Define and govern the IT policy, standards, and risk management framework — maintaining the IT risk register, ensuring regulatory compliance (PCI-DSS, SOX), overseeing vendor due diligence, and maturing BCP/DR programs in alignment with enterprise risk appetite.

  • Leadership & Operational Excellence - Build and lead a high-performing IT leadership team while serving as a strategic thought partner to management — owning the IT operating and capital budget, driving multi-year technology roadmaps, and championing organizational change across diverse stakeholder groups.

  • Strategy & Innovation - Translate emerging technology trends (AI/ML, zero trust, composable architecture) into practical, business-aligned roadmaps — leading annual IT strategic planning, cultivating an innovation pipeline, and providing executive and Board-level visibility into technology performance and value delivery.

  • Financial Performance & P&L Ownership Accountable for IT operating and capital budgets across all domains — partnering with Finance to deliver forecasts and performance targets while driving profitability through cost discipline, vendor negotiations, and operational excellence.

What You Bring

  • 15+ years of progressive IT leadership experience, with at least 5 years at Director-level or above overseeing multi-disciplinary teams at enterprise scale.
  • Demonstrated track record of developing and executing multi-year technology strategy in organizations with significant operational complexity or geographic distribution.
  • Deep expertise across two or more key domains: Infrastructure/Network, Cybersecurity, Software/Application Engineering, IT Operations, or IT Governance, Risk & Compliance — with the strategic breadth to lead across all domains.
  • Experience in enterprise retail, consumer goods, distribution, or operationally intensive environments is strongly preferred.
  • Proven ability to manage multi-million-dollar IT budgets and lead complex vendor and partner ecosystems.
  • Track record of building high-performing technology organizations — including talent development, organizational design, and culture-building.

Why Calgary Co-op?

  • Be part of a purpose-driven, member-owned organization with deep roots in the Calgary community.
  • Lead a talented, passionate IT team with real impact on business growth.
  • Competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits package.
  • Collaborative and inclusive workplace culture.
