CARE USA has ambitious plans to grow its impact and influence over the next few years with a bold vision to raise $2billion and to impact 200mil lives by 2020.
As part of this growth strategy CARE needs to build greater awareness of the organization within the domestic US among the general public and key influencers and stakeholders. To achieve this CARE is looking to aggressively grow its media reach and cut through, and has created this new position of AVP Media & Public Relations to be based in NYC and lead the overall media relations and PR strategy and approach for the US organization.
This role will be the most senior media relations and communications strategy role in the organization. This person will be expected to build a strong multi-year strategy for how CARE can build its media relationships and presence rapidly.
This person will lead a team of media relations based across DC, Atlanta, and globally and will need to assess talent and structure and build out the team as needed, including developing NYC office presence. This role will focus on building media strategies for CARE to break through in the national press and tell the story and build constituents for our mission in overcoming poverty, achieving social justice and empowering women & girls globally.
The AVP Media & Public Relations will be a seasoned media professional, with strong and deep relationships with media and key influencers, and a strategic planner responsible for identifying policy communications opportunities and creating media moments for CARE.
The ideal candidate will be a proactive self-starter, with a can-do attitude, an in depth understanding of modern media and will have a strong network of contacts who are media influencers that can be leveraged to help CARE get it story out to the US general public.
Responsibilities:
LEAD MEDIA STRATEGY
- Develop and cultivate relationships with journalists and influencers. Build a strong network of CARE supporters and ambassadors that can be leveraged within the media landscape.
- Build strategic framework to differentiate CARE from our peers and ensure high share of voice in international emergency and humanitarian coverage.
- Position CARE and our leadership team (CEO, COO etc) as ‘go to’ experts who are regularly quoted in the media and desired for our opinions and commentary on newsworthy global events.
- Increase CARE’s standing with the news and mainstream media to a level where we are challenging IRC, Save the Children and UNICEF for media share of voice and thought leadership with the media.
- This person themselves will be seen as an industry influencer and will represent CARE at high profile events in NYC as needed.
THOUGHT LEADERSHIP
- Actively monitor, anticipate, identify and interpret key policy decisions that have direct or indirect effects on global development, the INGO community and CARE.
-Manage a range of communications, make CARE more influential with key audiences and advance CARE’s policy and advocacy agenda for priority issue.
- Actively pitch CARE’s positions and spokespersons with the goal of media placement in high coverage media nationwide.
- Assess current talent and build team with best in class talent and coach them for high performance.
- Help build and implement thought leadership strategy – including tactics such as Op-Eds, advocacy videos, press briefings and other forms of persuasive communications.
- Identify particular opportunities to differentiate CARE from the broader INGO community.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors Degree
- 10+ years experience of media or PR role or related sectors.
- At least 10 years experience managing a team and working in a matrixed fast moving environment
- Existing relationships with press and PR professionals within the US
