General Purpose
The Special Education Teacher Aide shall carry out those duties and activities assigned which will ensure the
effective operations of the building, class or activity to which they are assigned.
Qualifications & Requirements
• High school graduate preferably with some additional educational skills and training.
• Self-sufficient and require a minimum of supervision or assistance to aid in the care and education of
school children.
• Physically capable of performing duties in a specific program.
• Solid organizational and planning skills.
• CPR and First Aid certification.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Able to work as a member of a team and contribute to the agency vision and goals.
• Able to demonstrate confidentiality in all matters.
• Positive leadership skills.
• Must complete and pass required criminal history check.
Essential Duties (shall include, but are not limited to the following):
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The
requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
• Assist in daily classroom routines (i.e., dressing, toileting) and facilitate student participation in activities by
helping students who may be having difficulty in understanding.
• Assist the teacher by carrying out, under the supervision and direction of the teacher, group or
individualized instruction, remediation, or guided practice and data collection.
• Assist with any pre-vocational and vocational training activities for individual students or small groups of
students, as specified by the teacher.
• Supervise students during field trips, community-based instruction, playground, hygiene, recreational
activities, lunchroom, corridors, bus and other activities.
• Prepare classroom materials, assist the teacher in preparation of daily lesson plans, operate technology
equipment, make instructional charts and other tasks assigned by the teacher.
• Help with room inventory, record attendance, duplicate materials, prepare bus lists, record lunch and milk
money and/or other funds, file materials, records, letters, help correct student papers and other student
assignments, and do errands.
• Assist with implementation of individual student behavioral management plans and support programs.
• Attend building, staff and parent meetings, shall participate in parent conferences, perform housekeeping
tasks and comply with teacher requests to call parents.
• Care for the students' physical needs (changing clothes, feeding, lifting, tube feeding, suctioning,
catheterization, etc.).
• Help carry out directives of other special education staff.

• Must participate in various professional development activities and trainings, such as First Aid, CPR and
CPI.
• Predictable/reliable attendance.
Other Duties
• Act as a resource, if needed, to employees, students and the general public visiting the NC RESA.
• Possess knowledge of NC RESA’s organization, mission, and philosophy.
• Perform other duties deemed appropriate by the Classroom Teacher or Supervisor of Special Education.
