Description

The Tack/Water Truck Driver supports asphalt paving operations by safely operating either a tack truck or a water truck, depending on assignment. This role ensures proper surface preparation, dust control, and jobsite safety while performing routine maintenance, monitoring equipment, and coordinating closely with paving crews. Strong driving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in fast-paced outdoor environments are essential.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate a tack truck or water truck, as designated, to support paving operations through proper surface preparation, dust control, and safe material application.
  • Perform daily pre  and post trip inspections, including checking fluid levels, hoses, pumps, spray bars, and overall vehicle condition.
  • Identify mechanical issues and report them promptly to the appropriate technician or supervisor.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance, including cleaning spray bars, lubricating moving components, and ensuring pumps and nozzles function properly.
  • Monitor fluid levels (tack, water, fuel) throughout the day and refill as needed to maintain continuous operation.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and audit-ready truck, ensuring tanks, lines, and equipment remain free of buildup or contamination.
  • Coordinate with paving crews to ensure proper timing and placement of tack or water to support efficient and high-quality paving operations.
  • Follow proper procedures for handling, storing, and applying asphalt emulsions or water in compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
  • Follow all traffic control procedures, safety guidelines, and environmental regulations
  • Maintain accurate logs, documentation, and daily reports as required
  • Maintains a clean, safe, and compliant work environment by following all company safety policies, adhering to OSHA regulations, and practicing safe driving and equipment-handling procedures at all times.
  • Assist with jobsite setup, including layout, traffic control, and staging of materials when not driving.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • Valid required CDL type B with tank endorsement.
  • Strong understanding of safe driving practices in active construction zones.
  • 1-2 years of experience operating commercial vehicles in paving, milling, or heavy construction environments preferred.
  • Ability to read, follow and interpret safety documents, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals and plans.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Consistently demonstrate the organization’s core values by striving for excellence, fostering partnership, upholding integrity, and showing commitment.
  • Ability to follow verbal instructions and work as part of a team.
  • Must maintain constant situational awareness of moving vehicles, heavy machinery, and other hazards inherent to paving and construction operations
  • Ability to adhere to Superior policies and other safety regulations. 
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, and nights as required.
  • Must be 18 years of age

Physical Demands

This position requires the ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds; pull up one’s own body weight; and sit in one position for up to 12 hours per day. It also requires the ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and perform repetitive motions for extended periods; tolerate noise, vibration, heat, and outdoor conditions common to paving operations; demonstrate the manual dexterity needed to use hand tools and equipment; and maintain good eye-hand coordination, physical fitness, multi-limb coordination, static strength, and balance.

Work Environment

Work is performed outdoors on roadways, construction zones, and active traffic areas, often in hot, cold, or otherwise adverse weather. Employees are regularly exposed to hot asphalt, dust, fumes, loud noise, and vibration from tools and equipment.
