Job Summary:
The Resident Engineer will be responsible for overseeing construction managers, office engineers, inspectors, contractors and activities related to planning, inspection, and design reviews of construction and maintenance projects and managing his or her own tasks. The Resident Engineer role requires an experienced leader who is capable of balancing multiple responsibilities and concurrent activities and initiatives. The Resident Engineer will be an expert in the field, understanding customer needs and the goals for projects to enhance service/safety, as well as staying current on the latest technologies which, combined with lessons learned, allows personnel to leverage and develop practical solutions for their rail network.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Be able to self-manage
- Perform FRA mandated inspections
- Manage and train office engineers and other supporting staff
- Manage railroad state of good repair infrastructure projects
- Develop inspection reports
- Manage project budget and schedule for rehabilitation projects
- Development and Preparation of Long-Range Plans for State of Good Repair (SGR) Improvements
- Provide constructability reviews and developing/analyzing construction phasing from the railroads’ perspective
- Be able to communicate effectively with contractors and railroad managers
- Ability to read and understand construction and phasing plans
- Provide sound and economical solutions to structures facilities issues
- Conduct inspections while walking and other means as necessary
- Development of capital and maintenance work projects to reduce and control the risks associated with railway operations
- Prioritize site interventions as a result of determinations from site inspection, monitoring, and risk assessments
- Verify quantities of materials received or used
- Review submittals, RFIs, and pay applications
- Verify distances to ensure accuracy of dimensions of installations and layouts
- Prepare daily and weekly reports as required
- Proficient in railroad inspection maintenance and rehabilitation
- Capable of balancing multiple responsibilities and concurrent activities and initiatives
- Other duties as assigned or required to meet the business needs
