The Rest Area Attendant is responsible for delivering consistent, high-quality janitorial and grounds maintenance services at Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) rest areas and welcome centers. This role ensures facilities are clean, safe, sanitary, and welcoming for travelers, in compliance with all contractual, safety, and environmental standards.

 

Job Duties

 

Facility Cleaning & Sanitation

· Clean and disinfect restrooms, fixtures, walls, mirrors, floors, baby changing stations, and partitions

· Refill soap dispensers, toilet paper, and sanitary supplies

· Sweep, mop, vacuum, and polish floors and high-touch surfaces

· Steam clean tile and bathroom fixtures as scheduled

· Maintain cleanliness of lobby, vending areas, mechanical rooms, and entryways

 

Grounds Maintenance

· Pick up litter and empty trash/recycling bins regularly

· Mow, trim, and edge grass; maintain shrubs and landscape beds

· Remove snow and apply de-icing salt to sidewalks and designated parking areas

· Clean picnic tables, grills, shelter houses, and maintain ash disposal areas

· Power wash walkways as needed

 

Safety, Reporting & Compliance

· Complete daily facility checks and document maintenance needs in the Work Request system

· Report abandoned or stranded vehicles per established protocols

· Maintain safe storage of supplies and chemicals (SDS compliance)

· Wear approved uniform and personal protective equipment (PPE)

· Follow site-specific safety plans and emergency procedures

 

Shift Coverage & Communication

· Accurately log arrival/departure times and maintain sign-in/out sheets

· Coordinate break schedules and minimize service disruptions

· Communicate regularly with site supervisor or Facilities Manager on issues or deviations

 

Requirements

 

Required

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Reliable transportation to assigned rest area site
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays
  • Basic literacy and communication skills for recordkeeping and reporting
  • Physically able to lift up to 50 lbs., bend, walk, stand, and work in varied weather conditions

 

Preferred

  • Previous janitorial or custodial experience preferred
  • Landscaping or groundskeeping experience a plus
  • Familiarity with safe handling of cleaning chemicals and PPE
  • Customer service mindset and professionalism
