Job Description

About the Department

Under general supervision, the Correctional Health Nurse provides medical care to maintain the mental and physical health of YJRC residents. Performs first aid and provides emergency medical care as required.

Position Duties

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assesses individuals for medical and mental health needs. Completes physical examination of all residents within 7 days of admission and administers MAYSI mental health assessment within 24-72 hours of admission.
  • Responds to medical emergencies of varying levels of severity.
  • Organizes, maintains, and reviews medical records; contacts medical providers and pharmacies to verify illnesses, chronic conditions, medications, and other treatments or special needs.
  • Distributes medications; reviews medical records to prepare appropriate medications and doses for distribution.
  • Reviews and addresses medical requests; gathers medical charts; prepares examination rooms for medical providers; checks and records vitals, weight, height, and temperature; administers tests and collects blood samples as needed; cleans and dresses wounds.
  • Coordinates care for individuals being transferred for temporary or permanent placement at other facilities.
  • Communicates with outside medical and mental health organizations for ongoing care; referrals for specialized care.
  • Assists in developing policies and protocols related to medical care in the facility; makes departmental or individual medical recommendations.
  • Provides education to residents and facility staff regarding health issues. Coordinates wellness initiatives to enhance care within the facility.
  • Identifies, monitors, and secures supplies and equipment necessary to provide care as appropriate.
  • May provide back-up support to County Health Department nurse duties.
  • Demonstrates the ability to exemplify, by his/her actions, the County PRIDE philosophy.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines
Associate's degree in Nursing; AND two (2) years of nursing experience.

Knowledge of:

  • Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Practices and procedures for preparing and distributing prescription medications.
  • Work safety policies, procedures, and practices including the use of personal protective equipment.
  • Proper handling and disposal of biohazard materials.
  • Records maintenance and retention policies, procedures, and practices.

Skill in:
  • Preparing clear and concise reports.
  • Maintaining accurate records and documentation.
  • Assessing the mental and physical health of individuals and identifying treatment needs.
  • Typing and entering data with speed and accuracy.
  • Maintaining composure in stressful situations.
  • Interacting tactfully and professionally with County staff, outside agencies, and residents.
  • Collecting capillary and venous blood samples.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.
  • Maintaining confidential and sensitive information.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

Other Qualifications

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Must possess a license as a Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in Scott County juvenile detention center and requires exposure to potentially violent residents, hazardous chemicals, contagious illnesses, and infectious diseases.
May be required to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
