The RTR Residency Coach is a part-time (29 hours/week), 12-month position dedicated to accelerating the growth of grades 6-12 pre-service teachers and their mentors. Utilizing the New Teacher Center (NTC) model, this role provides high-leverage, primarily virtual coaching to bridge the gap between theory and practice in the secondary classroom. The Coach serves as a strategic partner in teacher preparation, adapting support throughout the school year to ensure resident and mentor success.

Unit: School Of Education MBU

Department: SOE Teach Lrng CTL

Duties & Responsibilities:

Professional Engagement & Collaboration

● Actively engage in high-impact professional learning sessions for both residents and mentors, ensuring alignment with the residency’s instructional goals.

● Contribute to team meetings and calibration sessions, collaborating with staff to refine the residency scope and sequence based on trends observed in the secondary setting.

● Maintain a high level of presence in a hybrid environment; while most professional learning and team meetings are conducted virtually, in-person attendance is required for key sessions in the Richmond and Northern Virginia areas to foster team cohesion and regional program alignment.

● Dedicate time to ongoing personal growth in the NTC coaching model, ensuring that feedback provided to residents and mentors remains current, consistent, and evidence-based.

Instructional Coaching & Clinical Support

● Strategically monitor and support the mentor-resident relationship, ensuring a productive partnership focused on the gradual release of responsibility and effective co-teaching.

● Conduct regular, high-impact virtual coaching sessions with secondary resident-mentor pairs, utilizing NTC coaching language and stances to move teaching practice forward and improve student outcomes.

● Review and provide feedback on residency-specific tasks (including lesson plans and video-recorded instruction) to provide content-specific feedback that is both actionable and high-leverage.

● Utilize data-driven practices and formal evaluation processes to help residents and mentors identify strengths and growth areas, facilitating the creation, implementation, and monitoring of individualized goals that align with teaching and mentoring competencies.

Documentation & Accountability

● Ensure all residency program requirements and tasks are completed thoroughly and on schedule, providing timely intervention and strategic support when residents or mentors fall behind established benchmarks.

● Synthesize coaching observations into concise, high-quality narrative notes to help program leadership evaluate the health and progress of residency partnerships.

● Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation, ensuring that all data is ready for program-level review.
