    Position Title: Debate Coach (part-time)

    Flexible Schedule: Minimum of 2 days per week (after school) and Saturdays (October - March)

    Reports To: Program Director
    FLSA Status: Exempt

     

    Position Summary

    The Debate Coach is responsible for developing and leading a comprehensive debate program that fosters students' critical thinking, public speaking, research, and argumentation skills. This role includes coaching students for competitions, organizing practices, and promoting a positive, inclusive team culture. The Debate Coach serves as a mentor and role model while supporting student growth both academically and personally.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Plan, organize, and lead regular debate practices and training sessions
    • Instruct students in debate formats (e.g., policy, Lincoln-Douglas, public forum), argument construction, and rebuttal techniques
    • Teach research skills, evidence evaluation, and effective communication strategies
    • Prepare students for local, regional, and state competitions, including tournament registration and logistics
    • Attend and supervise students at debate tournaments, which may include evenings and weekends
    • Provide individualized coaching and feedback to support student development
    • Promote teamwork, sportsmanship, and a respectful competitive environment
    • Collaborate with school staff to support student academic success and eligibility requirements
    • Maintain program records, including student participation, results, and progress
    • Communicate effectively with students, families, and administration regarding schedules, expectations, and performance
    • Ensure compliance with school policies and applicable regulations

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree preferred in Education, Communications, Political Science, English, or related field
    • Prior experience in debate (as a participant or coach) strongly preferred
    • Strong knowledge of debate formats, rules, and competition structures
    • Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills
    • Ability to mentor and motivate students with diverse backgrounds and skill levels
    • Experience working with school-aged students preferred

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Strong public speaking and presentation skills
    • Ability to analyze arguments and provide constructive feedback
    • Effective time management and organizational skills
    • Ability to manage group dynamics and foster a positive team environment
    • Proficiency in research tools and digital resources

    Working Conditions

    • Work is typically performed in a school or classroom setting, after school hours and will include Saturdays
    • Requires flexibility for after-school practices, evening events, and weekend competitions
    • Travel to competitions will be required

    Physical Requirements

    • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods during practices and competitions
    • Ability to communicate clearly in person and in group settings
    • Ability to travel and supervise students in various environments
