Job Description

Job Description

The Applied Sciences Bureau of the South Florida Water Management District seeks a scientist with significant data management and data analysis experience. The Bureau is responsible for producing and managing data that supports ecosystem restoration and management from Orlando to Key West.

The position assists with the development of water resource protection criteria for water bodies at risk of significant harm, Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) projects, and Restoration, Coordination, and Verification (RECOVER) monitoring. This includes overseeing data management protocols, loading data into relational databases, specifically Oracle RDMS, retrieving data from Oracle using MS Excel, JMP, SAS, and R, and analyzing data. Working knowledge of XML databases and advanced knowledge of GIS data management, specifically ESRI Arc Pro, Field Maps, and enterprise spatial engines is desired.

The incumbent will be responsible for contributing to the Resource Protection and Management (RPM) section’s annual reporting in various formats. Individuals whose experience focuses on ecological processes, habitat responses to hydrologic drivers, and the south Florida ecosystem are especially urged to apply. Monitoring, research, and modeling provides the scientific basis for management of water resources and the establishment of water protection criteria in South Florida.

The candidate for this position should have demonstrable abilities in technical, oral, and written communication and in working in interdisciplinary teams in the application of science to develop appropriate products. Experience managing scientific datasets and statistical analyses to understand the influence of hydrology on ecosystem function and biotic responses, and the use of Python/R programming language is preferred. Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required. 
 
Position may be filled at the Senior Scientist level or Scientist 4 depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.

Employment Guidelines:

Senior Scientist: Master’s Degree in aquatic ecology, biology or a related discipline and at least 6 years of qualifying experience that demonstrates measurable career progression within a science discipline that can be applied to support the District's strategic goals and objectives.

Scientist 4: Bachelor's Degree in Natural or Physical Sciences and 4+ years experience that demonstrates measurable career progression within scientific discipline that can be applied to support the District's strategic goals and objectives.

Licenses:
A valid State of Florida Driver's License is required.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment:
The incumbent will be mostly working in an office environment operating a personal computer. Some travel will be required to conduct business in the field or at remote locations.

Due to the District's response role and in the total scope of emergency management, this position may at times, be required to provide support before, during and after major storm events and emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies, depending on assigned emergency response role.
