Job Description

The BYU English Language Center is hiring ESL Instructors to teach classes for the upcoming semester. This role is ideal for individuals with degrees in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) or related fields.

The ESL Instructor will teach 65-minute class periods Monday-Thursday each week per course assignment. ESL Instructors Course English proficiency ranges from novice to advanced high. Course subjects include grammar, listening and speaking, reading, and writing. The ESL instructor is responsible for all course-related tasks from creating a syllabus to participating in end of semester test grading.

Required Degree:

Bachelor's degree with a TESOL minor

Preferred Degree:

TESOL Master's Degree or related field, TESOL Graduate Certificate
 
Desired Experience:  

  • Experience with teaching the English language is required.

  • Knowledge of Second Language Acquisition theory.

  • Familiarity with Canvas learning management system

Responsibilities

  • Create a syllabus and course calendar for the assigned class.

  • Teach 4.5 hours per week.

  • Offer office hours (1 per week per course assignment) for student support.

  • Create course assignments and assessments.

  • Keep regularly updated grade records throughout the semester.

  • Provide meaningful and timely feedback to students’ work.

  • Develop lesson plans.

  • Grade students’ performance on Language Acquisition Tests (LATs).

  • Attend required meetings.


Hires will teach 1-3 classes (9 hours/week per class) at the English Language Center (ELC). Instruction occurs in-person, on the Brigham Young University Campus, English Language Center.
