Job Description

Reports to: Principal/Fine Arts Director 
Wage/Hour Status: Exempt
Pay Grade: Teacher Pay

PRIMARY PURPOSE: Provides instruction regarding theater arts program and encourages students to develop the skill and ability to excel in theater arts; responsible for contributing to the educational program as a whole and to the growth of each student; provides opportunities for students to participate in a high-level, challenging curriculum in the areas of responsibility

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
Master's Degree, preferred; Bachelor’s Degree required
Theater Arts Teacher Certification
 
Special Knowledge/Skills:
General knowledge of teaching techniques and procedures


 
Experience:
At least two to five years of successful professional experience including classroom teaching and theater arts program administration preferred           
 
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:



  • Establishes performance criteria for competition and evaluate students’ theatrical abilities initially and on a regular basis.

  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent with the needs and capabilities of the student theatrical group involved.

  • Manages and supervises theater activities, contests and practice sessions that promote individual growth in theatrical skills, teamwork and appropriate theater/performance etiquette.

  • Keeps informed of and ensure compliance with all DISD/UIL/TMEA rules and guidelines.

  • Recruits and retains student membership in the theater program, as well as monitors and enforces student eligibility criteria for extracurricular participation.

  • Works with Fine Arts Director in scheduling competitions and coordinating arrangements.

  • Cooperates with other members of the school staff in planning and implementing instructional goals and objectives for the overall educational development of student performances.

  • Assists in the selection of instructional materials.

  • Compiles, maintains and files all reports, records, inventory and additional required data and documents.

  • Complies with policies established by federal and state laws, State Board of Education rules and the local board policy in area of theater arts.

  • Develops professional skills appropriate to job assignment.

  • Travels with theater students and supervises group during theatrical competitions in assigned events.

  • Maintains proper and appropriate discipline among students during theater contests, practice sessions and while on trips off school property.

  • Encourages, by example, and through instruction, sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of theatrical participation.

  • Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with student actors and their parents.

  • Articulates the district’s mission and goals in the area of theater to the community and solicits its support in realizing the mission.

  • Demonstrates awareness of district-community needs and initiates activities to meet those identified needs.

  • Demonstrates the use of appropriate and effective techniques for community and parent involvement.

  • Demonstrates behavior that is professional, ethical and responsible.

  • Assesses and responds to needs related to job responsibilities.

  • Develops and coordinates a continuing evaluation of the teaching program and implement changes based on the findings.

  • Follows all the rules, regulations and policies of Denton ISD and follows directives from superiors.

  • Follows attendance policy as assigned by Supervisor.

  • Performs other functions that may be assigned by the Administration and/or Supervisor. 


WORKING CONDITIONS:
Mental Demands: Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); interprets policy, procedures and data; coordinates district functions; maintains emotional control under stress
 
Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Frequent districtwide and occasional statewide travel; occasional prolonged and irregular hours; frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing and pulling; occasional lifting up to 50 pounds; prolonged use of computer and repetitive hand motions
 
MINIMUM SALARY: Teacher Pay
 


DUTY DAYS: 187 days per year
 
APPOINTMENT: The appointment of this position will be recommended to the Board of Trustees by the Superintendent of Schools on the basis of the applicant’s training, experience, and expertise. The Board of Trustees must give final approval.
