We are currently looking for a Utility Pretreatment Technician I to join our team. This role is a great fit for someone who enjoys a mix of fieldwork and problem solving, and who takes pride in protecting the environment and public infrastructure. Position Duties

Conducts site inspections of facilities that discharge into Cary’s sewer system;


Disseminates federal, state, and local regulatory conditions and requirements;


Evaluates dischargers to ensure they are in compliance with their permit; reviews file data to assist in compliance determination;


Makes recommendations on sizing interceptor devices and performs inspections in the field;


Samples and monitors facility wastewater discharges;


Conducts Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) inspections including new and existing facilities;


Enters FOG inspection and wastewater sampling data into database applications;


Performs cursory site plan review of FOG and pretreatment related projects;


Prepares letters for Utility Pretreatment Supervisor’s signature;


Follows established standard operating procedure protocols for wastewater sample collection, sampling equipment cleaning, sample container cleaning, sample transporting, and proper completion of sampling paperwork;


Assists Utility Pretreatment Supervisor in evaluating sewer users’ potential for spill control;


Sets up and conducts meetings with potential new users of the sewer system;


Assists in developing and implementing grease and oil control ordinance;


Assists in enforcement of the sewer use and grease and oil control ordinances;


Responds to sewer overflows; investigates and recommends action;


Assists in the education efforts of commercial and residential sewer users;


Identifies and Observes for illegal discharges to the environment;


Assists with the inflow and infiltration program and other utility related programs;


Manage any non-compliance inspection issues from start to resolution with industrial and commercial sewer users;


Performs other job-related tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications

General knowledge of the principles of environmental engineering and sciences; general knowledge of wastewater treatment; general knowledge of laboratory analysis of wastewater; general knowledge of laboratory processes and procedures; general knowledge of the federal, state and local laws related to sewer discharge; general knowledge of the legal foundations of pretreatment regulations and the legal implications of actions; general knowledge of computer application such as Microsoft Office; ability to deal effectively with others; ability to analyze data; ability to maintain accurate database; ability to communicate efficiently and effectively with co workers and citizens, both orally and in writing; ability to enforce ordinances; ability to perform multiple tasks; ability to work independently.


Physical Requirements

Work in this class is generally light but may require exposure to various environmental conditions such as heat, cold, and rain. An employee must have the physical agility to move about freely including climbing stairs and accessing sampling sites. Moderate to heavy lifting may be required in performing the work. Visual acuity, including the ability to perceive color accurately, is necessary to perform paperwork, read test results, and complete reports. An employee must also be able to hear, talk, and smell.



Other Qualifications

REQUIRES:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from a two-year community college with an associate’s degree in chemistry, engineering technology or environmental science and some experience in wastewater treatment.


Possession of a valid driver's license with a good driving history. 


Completion of the North Carolina Grade I Pretreatment Certification (or the ability to obtain within 24 months).
 



PREFERENCES:

Current possession of North Carolina Grade I Pretreatment Certification

AS/BS in chemistry, engineering technology or environmental science with 3+ years wastewater experience is preferred.
