Responsible for all switching on the distribution system (34.5kV and below).
Monitors transmission, sub-transmission and substation, status and integrity, directing planned and emergency switching from the substation transformer high side switch and below.
Approves and directs planned, emergency, and hot-line switching. Monitors and analyzes the distribution of electricity, gas, and steam throughout the Alliant Energy system. Uses discretion and has authority to take any action necessary to assure the distribution system is operated in a stable and reliable manner including load shedding and black start. Coordinates the scheduling and routing of resources necessary to respond to routine and emergency work, directing and supporting field personnel for distribution switching, electric and gas emergencies in the most efficient and safe manner. Operates the electric, gas, and steam distribution systems in a safe, reliable, and efficient manner
What you will do
- In coordination with other system operating personnel, may assume responsibility and authority for the following: analyzes the integrity of the distribution system based on current and planned conditions.
- Involved in the planning, coordination and supervision of gas and electric and steam operations.
- Activities including routing resources and material involved with routine maintenance and emergency work.
- Uses tools such as Gas SCADA to monitor the operation of High Pressure Gas Lines, Gate Stations and Low Pressure Distribution Systems. Identify issues and take appropriate action on the company's gas distribution system in order to insure the adequate transmission of gas.
- Thoroughly familiar with the current status and configuration of the electric distribution system to insure that switching is performed in a safe and secure manner while arranging for the de-energizing of lines for construction, maintenance and the restoration of service.
- Responds to emergencies in accordance with company policies and procedures to minimize customer impact, (SAFI, SADI, etc.), taking all necessary actions to maintain system integrity by: sectionalizing, monitoring system conditions, or other appropriate action.
- Demonstrates leadership in the area of safety: Requires observing and enforcing safety rules and operating practices, encouraging safe work behaviors and promptly correcting conditions and unsafe work behaviors which may lead to accidents.
- Advises field supervisors of improper operating practices or performance in violation of Company safety practices in their area of responsibility.
- Optimally schedules and routes resources to respond to customer requests with the assistance of a computer aided dispatching (CAD) and mobile data terminal system (MDT).
- Directs outage restoration activities including troubleshooting with the assistance of the following computer applications: Customer Information System (CIS), Geographical Information System (GIS), Distribution Management System (DMS), maps and other information.
- Identifying issues and taking appropriate action on the company's electric distribution system in order to insure the adequate transmission of electricity. Responsible for coordinating and directing outage restoration activities including troubleshooting with the assistance of the following computer applications: Customer Information System, Geographical Information System, Distribution Management System, maps, and other information.
- Dispatches the appropriate resources to respond to customer requests requiring immediate or emergency action using CAD, DMS and CIS. Dispatches the appropriate resources in response to gas curtailments and restoration.
- Completes customer orders on the Customer Information System and/or CAD.
- Initiates emergency call tree action and routes information to appropriate departments and personnel (i.e. Corporate Communications, General Manager, Overhead and Underground Managers, etc.).
- Communicates with field personnel via company radio or cell phones.
- Responsible for responding to emergency radio calls and notifying the appropriate rescue personnel. Maintains call-out lists and files with the assistance of computer applications.
- Maintains logs and completes outage reports and shift summary reports. Able to access and maintain appropriate DDC files for daily operations.
- Monitors weather forecasts throughout the entire service territory and advises the areas of weather conditions in advance in preparation for service restoration.
- Completes oil spill assessment form and reports them appropriately. Assists in implementation and enhancements of all computer applications.
- Bachelor's Degree Emphasis in business administration or related field Required
Required Experience
- 3 years of experience in utility operations/construction
Other Requirements
- DDC guidelines include a 30-minute response time from the employee’s residence to the DDC.
- This position is subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements under 49 CFR Part 40 and PHMSA regulations (Part 199).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to troubleshoot electric, gas and steam problems by analyzing available information. Knowledge of company safety and environmental rules.
- Thorough knowledge of electric and gas systems and how they operate. Must comply with FERC and ATC Standards of Conduct.
- Knowledge of associated computer systems. Knowledge of union contracts.
- Knowledge of company strategy regarding outage restoration. Ability to use independent judgment in decision-making processes. Ability to read and interpret maps.
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
