Bachelor’s Degree or higher in an education related field
Valid Michigan Administrative Certificate K-12 or meet equivalent requirements
Preferred:
Master’s Degree or higher in an education related field
Experience using the state-approved 5D Teacher Evaluation Framework
Advanced curriculum degree or coursework

Job Description
POSITION TITLE: Assistant Principal – Middle School
CLASSIFICATION: Administrator
REPORTS TO: Building Principal and Executive Director of Academic Services
JOB FUNCTION: The Assistant Principal shall serve as an educational leader and administrator of the
school.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Serves as a lead administrator in the absence of the principal.
2. Lead through the leveraging of the district systems and routines, while maintaining a drive for
results by demonstrating persistence, directness, and the ability to monitor and plan ahead.
3. Establish and promote high standards and expectations for all students and staff for academic
performance and responsibility for behavior.
4. Leverage and monitor the talent management district system to recruit, hire, assign, evaluate,
retain and/or remove the instructional talent required to impact student and teacher performance.
5. Cast a vision of and monitors for instruction and strategies that address the wide range of
teaming, behavioral, and communication styles of the student population.
6. Demonstrate an extensive knowledge of the district visions for high quality, subject specific
instruction and the capacity to coach teachers for growth in instructional routines.
7. Administer a system of ongoing data collection and analysis, through collaborative routines, to
inform a continuously responsive and adaptive system of tiered instruction.
8. Manage, evaluate and supervise effective and clear procedures for the operation and
functioning of the school consistent with the philosophy, mission, values and goals of the district
including instructional programs, extracurricular activities, discipline systems to ensure a safe and
orderly climate, building maintenance, program evaluation, personnel management, office
operations, and emergency procedures.
9. Ensure compliance with all laws, board policies and civil regulations.
10. Establish the annual master schedule for instructional programs, ensuring sequential teaming
experiences for students consistent with the district's philosophy, mission statement and
instructional goals.
11. Supervise the instructional programs of the school, evaluating lesson plans and observing
classes on a regular basis to encourage the use of a variety of instructional strategies and materials
consistent with research on learning and child growth and development.
12. Establish procedures for evaluation and selection of instructional materials and equipment.
13. Supervise in a fair and consistent manner effective discipline and attendance systems with
high standards, consistent with the philosophy, values, and mission of the district. Ensure a safe,
orderly environment that encourages students to take responsibility for behavior and creates high
morale among staff and students. File all required reports regarding violence, vandalism,
attendance and discipline matters.
14. Establish a professional rapport with students and with staff that has their respect. Display the
highest ethical and professional behavior and standards when working with students, parents and
school personnel. Serve as a role model for students, dressing professionally, demonstrating the

importance and relevance of learning, accepting responsibility, and demonstrating pride in the
education profession. Encourage all teachers to do the same.
15. Maintain visibility with students, teachers, parents and the district.
16. Communicate regularly with parents, seeking their support and advice, so as to create a
cooperative relationship to support the student in the school and in the home.
17. Initiate and maintain consistent communication with community members and community
partners, building on and leveraging their strengths as co-educators.
18. Establish and maintain efficient procedures and effective controls for the expenditure of
school funds in accordance with the adopted budget, subject to the direction and approval of the
district.
19. Demonstrate cultural proficiency and uses culturally relevant routines and practices.
20. Responsible for student attendance and behavior.
21. Responsible for monitoring and evaluating support staff.
22. Responsible for observing and evaluating teaching staff.
23. Supervise before school, during school and after school activities and events.
24. Participate in professional learning opportunities, School Improvement meetings, and
Building Leadership Network.
25. Other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to stand, walk and sit frequently or for prolonged periods of time. Ability to travel to school
buildings, offices, various events and other engagements. Ability to perform extensive work at a
computer display terminal. Additionally, physical abilities include
lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling/stooping/crouching/
reaching/handling/talking/hearing conversations/near and far visual acuity/depth perception/color
vision/field of vision.
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
· Required
· Bachelor’s Degree or higher in an education-related field
· Valid Michigan Administrative Certificate K-12 or meet equivalent requirements.
· Preferred
· Master’s Degree or higher in an education related field
· Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate or previous K-12 administrative experience
· Minimum of five (5) successful years of classroom teaching experience
