Job Description

The State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA) provides essential care and support to residents in a healthcare, long-term care, or assisted living facility. Under the supervision of a licensed nurse, the STNA assists residents with daily living activities, such as personal hygiene, mobility, and feeding, while ensuring their comfort and well-being. This role is vital in promoting resident safety, dignity, and quality of life through compassionate and attentive care.



Key Responsibilities:





  • Resident Care:




    • Assist residents with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and oral hygiene.

    • Help residents with mobility, including turning, positioning, transferring, and ambulating using assistive devices as needed.

    • Feed residents or assist with meals, ensuring proper nutrition and hydration, and monitor food and fluid intake.

    • Monitor and report changes in residents’ physical, emotional, or behavioral conditions to the nursing staff.




  • Vital Signs and Monitoring:




    • Measure and record residents' vital signs, such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration, as directed by nursing staff.

    • Assist with monitoring residents’ skin conditions, reporting any signs of skin breakdown or pressure sores.

    • Assist with weight checks, intake and output monitoring, and other health-related measurements.




  • Documentation:




    • Accurately document care provided and residents' responses to care in the facility’s electronic health record (EHR) or paper charts.

    • Maintain records of residents' food and fluid intake, toileting habits, and other observations as required.

    • Report any concerns or incidents to the supervising nurse and complete required documentation.




  • Resident Safety and Comfort:




    • Ensure residents’ safety by adhering to facility protocols and infection control guidelines.

    • Assist in maintaining a clean, organized, and comfortable living environment for residents.

    • Practice proper hand hygiene, use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required, and follow all safety procedures.




  • Emotional Support and Resident Interaction:




    • Provide compassionate care and emotional support to residents, engaging in conversation and offering comfort as needed.

    • Respect residents' dignity, privacy, and personal preferences, and promote their independence wherever possible.

    • Assist residents with social and recreational activities, encouraging participation to enhance their quality of life.




  • Team Collaboration:




    • Work collaboratively with nursing staff, therapists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care for residents.

    • Participate in care plan meetings and contribute to the development of individualized care plans.

    • Assist with transportation of residents to appointments, therapy sessions, or activities within the facility as needed.
