Job Description

Team Coach Level 2 is an experienced competitive coaching role for coaches who are ready to take independent ownership of athlete groups, contribute meaningfully to training design, and step into on-floor leadership within 5.Life’s competitive youth program. At this level, you lead practices, track athlete development with rigor, and engage with parents as a trusted program representative. You’re building toward becoming a pillar of 5.Life’s team coaching staff.

Reports to: Head Team Coach / Youth Program Manager 

 

Responsibilities 

Team Practice & Training Delivery 

  • Independently lead assigned team practice sessions, including structure, content, and pacing 
  • Deliver technically advanced instruction on movement efficiency, competition strategy, route reading, and mental performance 
  • Design and implement session plans aligned with the broader team training calendar 
  • Adapt training in real time based on athlete readiness, energy, and developmental needs 
  • Provide individualized coaching feedback to athletes during and after practice 

Athlete Development & Tracking 

  • Maintain detailed athlete progress records and contribute to long-term development plans 
  • Facilitate structured goal-setting conversations with athletes each season 
  • Identify athlete strengths, limiters, and next-step opportunities; communicate findings to the Head Coach 
  • Support athlete mental performance through a culture of psychological safety and growth mindset 

Training Design & Curriculum Input 

  • Contribute to team training calendar design, periodization planning, and curriculum updates 
  • Document effective drills, training blocks, and athlete notes for shared coaching use 
  • Stay current on competitive climbing trends, training science, and athlete development best practices 

Competition Leadership 

  • Attend all assigned competitions; lead warm-ups, athlete prep, and on-floor coaching support 
  • Provide structured post-competition debrief with athletes and report outcomes to the Head Coach 
  • Represent 5.Life and USA Climbing values at all sanctioned events 

Risk Management, Operations & Accountability 

  • Own risk management protocols for every session you lead 
  • Complete all administrative duties: attendance, progress logs, incident reports, and shift notes 
  • Mentor Level 1 Team Coaches on the floor; model professional coaching standards 
  • Communicate proactively with the Head Coach on program quality and athlete concerns 

Parent Engagement 

  • Lead parent communications for your athlete group: progress updates, competition logistics, and program news 
  • Build trusting, professional relationships with families that support long-term athlete retention 

 

Results 

  • Athletes under your direct coaching show measurable technical and competitive development 
  • Training plans you contribute to are well-structured and effectively executed 
  • Parents express confidence in you as a coach and advocate for their athlete 
  • Level 1 coaches learn from watching you work 
  • You are considered a reliable, high-quality coaching presence by the entire team staff 

 

Requirements 

You Must Have 

  • Minimum 20 years of age 
  • 4+ years of climbing experience; ability to climb V5 or higher 
  • 2+ years of experience coaching competitive youth climbing teams 
  • Current SafeSport certification 
  • Current CPR/First Aid/AED certification 
  • USAC Coaches membership (Level 100 or higher) 
  • Availability for competitions and potential travel 

Preferred (Not Required) 

  • USAC Level 2 
  • Background in periodized training, sport science, or athletic performance 
  • Experience facilitating parent meetings or athlete development reviews 

 

Compensation & Benefits 

Pay: $21+/hr, commensurate with experience. Eligible for annual merit review.
