Under direct supervision, responsible for reading water meters for the purpose of determining water consumption for billing and performing a variety of tasks in support of the repair and maintenance of the City’s water meter reading system; performs related duties as required.
Position Duties
Reads water meters; locates and uncovers buried meters; cuts off meters for non-payment and reconnects service when payment is made. Connects new service when necessary and disconnects service when customer moves. Shuts off water for customers in case of emergency situations and restores service after repairs are completed. Notifies customers of any detected leaks.
Maintains water meter and radio read systems, which includes but not limited to, cleaning out meter boxes, raising and leveling meter boxes, fixing leaks when encountered, marking meter location on curb, repairing broken wire connections, replacing broken or damaged parts and uncovering meter boxes.
Responsible for running diagnostics to ensure meters and electronics are functioning correctly, all warranty work is completed, warranty parts are sent back to manufacturer for replacement and keeps a running inventory to insure an ample amount of stock is always on hand.
Maintains weekly, monthly, and yearly reports to ensure high standards and outcomes are met. Supervisor will determine the parameters and set the goals to be achieved accordingly.
Performs other duties as assigned. Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential function of this position, as is the ability to create and maintain professional, harmonious working relationships with others.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED. No experience required. Construction or water meter experience is preferred.
Other Qualifications
Must reside within a 30-minute response time from the City Hall Building, employees will have (6) months from their employment date to relocate.
Will be subject to covering/handling first-call or back-up call when assigned.
Valid Class “D” water distribution license or the ability to obtain one within the City’s 6-month probationary period.
Valid driver's license required. Must have and maintain a good driving record in accordance with the driving standards as established by the City of Rowlett. Must report all traffic citations to his/her departmental Director or his/her designee within two working days of receipt.
Must be able to stand, walk on uneven terrain, asphalt, concrete, water, mud, rock and frequently work in mud which may be knee deep. Ability to lift tools and equipment which may weigh from 50-75 pounds. This job requires reaching, bending, twisting, kneeling, crouching, climbing and balance to use equipment, and access elevated work sites. Exposed to extremes in outdoor temperature, inclement weather, loose or stray animals, stinging insects, and other environmental hazards.
