Job Description

About the Department

Under supervision, performs a variety of unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, repair and maintenance of park and open space facilities, structures, and grounds; and performs related duties as required.

Position Duties

Performs a variety of duties which may include, litter removal and custodial duties such as sweeping, mopping, and maintaining and repairing parks facilities and equipment.

Irrigates, mows, weeds, and trims lawns and landscaped areas; plants, waters, and maintains various vegetation such as bushes, trees, flowers, shrubs, and lawns; trims and prune bushes.

Assists with preparation and maintenance of athletic fields and related facilities; repairs and replaces irrigation systems; modifies irrigation schedules as necessary; clears debris from walkways, paths, and other parks/recreational facilities.

Performs basic construction, carpentry, plumbing, and painting tasks; cleans and re-stocks bathroom facilities; properly disposes of brush trimmings, rubbish, paper, and trash; troubleshoots and makes minor electrical repairs to light fixtures, ballasts, outlets, and related equipment.

Performs rough concrete work; repairs or builds concrete pads, ramps, pathways, and walls.

Installs, inspects, and repairs playground equipment and other related parks/recreational equipment; refers to appropriate staff for further attention.

Operates various equipment involved in the maintenance of parks, including mowers, light tractors with attachments, dump trucks, front-end loaders, and other tools and equipment.

Identifies and resolves or reports hazards; maintains maintenance records.

Has frequent contact with employees, citizens, local state, federal agencies, and other city departments.

Ability to arrive to work on time and must maintain a regular and reliable level of attendance.

Performs other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Safety practices, accident prevention techniques and occupational hazards.
  • Safe operation of power tools and equipment commonly used in the performance of park and open space maintenance and construction, and maintenance and repair of small equipment and power and manual tools.
  • Principles and practices of horticulture, landscaping; and irrigation systems, controllers, and components.
  • Park maintenance work procedures and practices; materials and methods used in the design, construction, installation, maintenance and repair of parks grounds and structures.
  • Plumbing, painting, carpentry, electrical, welding, and structural methods, and practices used in park facilities.
  • Principles and practices of customer service.
  • Performing routine and semi-skilled tasks in a variety of maintenance and construction activities.

Other Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent and one (1) year experience in landscaping, irrigation, or equivalent experience.

Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

A Valid Class C Texas driver license and the ability to maintain a satisfactory driving record.
