About the Department

This is a Part-Time position responsible for the overall operations, managerial duties, and provides information to students, staff, and the community concerning the Fitness and Recreation Center and its Club Sports programs.

Position Duties

SUMMARY
The Alvin College Fitness Center operates Monday – Thursday 7:00 am – 9:00 pm, Friday 7:00 am – 6:00 p m and Saturday 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 pm. The Fitness Center Attendant and Club Coach will be responsible for the overall operations and managerial duties when scheduled and provide information to students, staff, and the community concerning the Fitness and Recreation Center and its Club Sports programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Organizational duties include but not limited to fee collections, building security, building maintenance and reception
  • When scheduled, ensures the Fitness Center is opened on time to receive members or guests
  • When scheduled, ensures all members and guests have left the Fitness Center upon closing and ensures the building is secured
  • Coordinates and monitors the duties of evening and weekend student workers
  • Provides for the health and safety of Fitness Center participants
  • Spot checks and monitors all facilities and equipment on a regular daily basis, especially the cardiovascular machines (treadmills, ergometers, and stair climbers)
  • When scheduled, ensures the Fitness Center is cleaned
    1. This is to be done between 8:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Monday – Thursday
    2. This is to be done between 5:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Friday
    3. This is to be done between 11:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. on Saturday
  • Cleaning duties include but not limited to collecting and removing trash in gym area, cleaning commodes and urinals in dressing rooms and etc., sweeps the gym and racquetball courts on Friday and Saturday after closing and ensures that all weights and barbells are properly returned to the racks in the free weight room
  • Assists with answering all incoming phone calls and basic clerical duties when requested
  • Registers guests and members as they enter the Fitness Center
  • Prepares membership applications with prospective members
  • Issues lockers, locks, and towels, to appropriate Fitness Center members
  • Washes, folds, delivers, and collects towels for members and guests
  • Makes minor repairs on machines and equipment (ex. cable change)
  • Assumes all other responsibilities assigned by the Fitness Center Manager to ensure the efficiency of the Fitness Center, including but not limited to staff scheduling
  • Creates social media content for overall operations of the Club Sports, Fitness and Recreation programs
  • May assist with administrative and operational duties of recreation, intramurals and club sports
  • Maintains local club college leagues compliance by updating rules, team statistics, schedules, rosters, and other related items
  • The primary job duty of a Club Coach is to provide quality coaching and instruction to students participating in the Club Sports program
  • Assists in the identification, recruitment, coaching, and development of student athletes
  • Organizes and completes game-day-related tasks
  • Participate in teaching soft skills identified by Club Sports Athletics, including academic responsibility
  • Monitors classroom attendance, academic performance, and academic progress of Club Sports athletes
  • Leading team conditioning sessions, conducting player drills, developing offensive, defensive skills, and contributing to overall player development during practices throughout each semester
  • Other related duties as assigned

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The incumbent typically works in an office/fitness center/gym environment and uses a computer, telephone and other office equipment as needed to perform duties. The noise level in the work environment is typical of that of a fitness center/gym and/or athletic field/arena. Incumbent may encounter frequent interruptions throughout the work day. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The employee is regularly required to sit, talk, or hear; frequently required to use repetitive hand motion, handle or feel, and to stand, walk, reach, bend or lift up to twenty (20) pounds.

Minimum Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Three (3) months of related experience
  • Playing and/or coaching experience at the high school, college/university and/or professional level in basketball, soccer, volleyball
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Six (6) months related experience
  • Minimum of two (2) years coaching experience
  • CPR/AED/First Aid certification
  • Adobe Express software
  • Bilingual English/Spanish
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • The ability to use good judgment in dealing with the public
  • Be able to communicate effectively to the degree that a positive image of Alvin College is projected 
  • Must be able to operate without direct supervision
  • Fitness equipment and general knowledge of fitness and exercise principles
  • Must be willing to be a role model and demonstrate how to be an effective coach
  • Must be available to work flexible hours including nights and weekends
  • Must be able to travel to games, and tournaments 
  • Must be able and willing to travel and perform duties away from campus as necessary
  • Must be able to operate a licensed motor vehicle, have access to a dependable motor vehicle, and possess a valid state driver's license
  • Must have and maintain a satisfactory driver's record and valid vehicle insurance at all times
  • Must possess enough knowledge to effectively coach
  • Must possess positive leadership and communication skills to promote a positive team attitude
  • Must be able to work effectively with a diverse student population
