POSITION: Natural Resources Education Intern

LOCATION: Red Cliff Treaty Natural Resources Division, Fish Hatchery Office Bayfield, WI.

WAGE: $16.00-$17.00/hour, 40 hours per week. Two positions.

SUPERVISOR(S): Natural Resources Director, Wildlife Specialist


THIS IS A FULL-TIME LIMITED TERM NON-EXEMPT POSITION.


This is a summer internship being offered by the Red Cliff Treaty Natural Resources Division. The internship duration is expected to be 10-12 weeks, with a 40 hour per week schedule. Must be an enrolled member of a Native American tribe and at least 18 years old to apply. Approximate internship dates are June-August.

 

JOB SUMMARY: Assist with various Red Cliff Treaty Natural Resources Division projects, including fisheries, wildlife, and hatchery projects. Coordinate with the Red Cliff Boys and Girls  Club to plan natural resource related lessons and workshops for youth club members. Assist with supervision and coordination of younger division interns.

Position Duties

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assist with data entry as directed by the wildlife and fisheries biologists.
  2. Work with wildlife specialist to plan simple natural resource educational outreach opportunities for elementary and middle school students at the Red Cliff Boys and Girls Club.
  3. Assist with wildlife trapping and monitoring efforts
  4. Work closely with staff across the Division to coordinate the schedule of younger youth interns
  5. Assist with fisheries fieldwork, such as fish stocking, stream electro fishing, and checking PIT tag stations.
  6. Assist with annual summer cultural events such as Language Camp and Wolf Camp.
  7. Learn hatchery duties, such as feeding fish, cleaning tanks, and clipping fins.
  8. Develop an area of interest and produce a technical writing product, such as a report or grant proposal.
  9. This is not an exhaustive list of the job duties, and some job duties may be assigned at the discretion of the supervisor.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: No direct supervisory authority. Some coordination of younger interns may be an expectation of this position.

Minimum Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE: No previous experience required. Some general knowledge about the natural resources field or experience working with youth is beneficial.

QUALIFICATIONS:

We are looking for active, ambitious team members who are interested in learning more about Natural Resource careers. The ideal candidate will be responsible, dependable, and safe in the work environment.

  1. Must be18-25years old
  2. Must have a high school diploma at the time the internship begins
  3. Enrolled in a college or technical school to pursue a 2-or4-year degree, or a recent graduate (within 2 years), in natural resources, education, or related field.
  4. Valid driver’s license

Native American applicants onlyPreference will be given to Red Cliff youth, but other enrolled tribal members will be considered in the case of equally qualified candidates. Both male and female candidates are encouraged to apply!

Other Qualifications

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Daily contact with supervisor, Treaty Natural Resources staff, and community members.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS  Some field work may be arduous and require a certain level of fitness to accomplish.  You must be able to be on your feet and walk on uneven terrain. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Duties will occur on forest lands, in streams, on Lake Superior, and in the hatchery setting. Work will vary with some time devoted to an office and/or garage (workshop) setting.

TRAVELREQUIREMENTS: The crew will often travel together to field sites. Some vehicle travel is expected, though almost all travel will be within 2 hours of Red Cliff.
