School Plants - Groundskeeper II

Department: School Plants

Pay Grade: U107

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

GENERAL PURPOSE

This position performs semi-skilled work supervising and participating in the maintenance and care of the grounds and related structures and equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under general supervision. Limited supervision is exercised over crewmembers.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Mows grass, trims trees, and maintains school grounds and facilities.

  • Organizes crew and prepares crew for tasks.

  • Obtains necessary equipment and tools.

  • Cleans shrubs and flower beds, cuts dead trees, trims shrubs, and applies weed killer when necessary.

  • Performs routine maintenance tasks on equipment, repairs hand tools, and repairs and maintains chain saws.

  • Operates bush hog.

  • Operates light automotive and/or power equipment.

  • Operates heavy equipment, e.g., front-end loader, backhoe, etc.

  • Plans and performs unusual or more difficult ground maintenance tasks.

  • Supervises crew inventory.

  • Assists various maintenance shops.

  • Lays and maintains asphalt and/or gravel in driveways, parking areas, and walkways.

  • Installs signs.

  • Performs other related duties as required/assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school

  • At least one year of experience in grounds maintenance work.

  • Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

  • Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s), and/or endorsement(s) for position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.

  • Must have CDL Class A when applying.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in grounds maintenance.

  • Knowledge of safety precautions applicable to the duties of the class.

  • Skill in coordinating the work of crew members.

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to use common hand tools.

  • Ability to operate machinery and equipment.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates..

 

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • The work environment is outside; the worker is subject to an outside environment where the conditions are extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.

  • This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  •  Work requires stooping, crouching, reaching, walking, pulling, lifting, and grasping; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, peripheral vision, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm’s length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities.
