Position Summary:
Provide classroom support and instruction for migrant students, focusing on improving reading and math skills. This position includes providing content, language, and experiential learning in the classroom.
The students' day is divided broadly into two sections. From breakfast until lunch, we focus on academics. For middle school students, there is a strong emphasis on reading and math. At the beginning of the program, pre-tests in reading and math are conducted. Post-tests are administered at the end of the program. The goal is to help demonstrate increased proficiency on these measures. The teachers work with the program coordinator to identify the skills on which students will be tested and taught. The program coordinator brings in other district resources (e.g. Teaching & Learning and Curriculum & Instruction Coordinators) when appropriate. Students who want to continue learning from home are provided resources to do so, including the opportunity to check out Chromebooks and Hotspots so as to independently pursue their goals at home. Bilingual EA support is provided all day. The teacher will collaborate with and direct the activities of the Bilingual EA to maximize benefits to the students.
The second part of the day is focused on enrichment. This can include STEAM activities, physical fitness, community outreach, field trips, and more. Teachers' interests and passions often drive this part of the day. MEP teachers often work collaboratively to plan various activities for the students. By being placed at the Middle School, we have access to the fitness room, gym, prairie, soccer and baseball fields, and more.
Teachers need to commit to 3 days of planning (4 hours/day) and 5 weeks of instruction (4 days/week; 7.7 hours/day). The only absences that will be approved during this time are for illness. Hiring is dependent on enrollment.
