General Description 

The Charge RN in the Operating Room manages the daily flow of surgeries and procedures, schedules staffing as well as circulates and coordinates the surgical team in all aspects of O.R. activities, providing optimum perioperative nursing care for patients. The Charge RN is accountable for ongoing evaluation and documentation of all components of the environment utilizing the nursing process. This role tracks and trends performance metrics for the OR. The Charge RN may also cover patient assignments when needed. 

Essential Job Duties 

  • Oversight for staffing assignments with SPD, Pre-op and PACU that supports OR volumes. 
  • Ability to manage daily flow of surgical and procedural rooms and schedule staffing when needed. 
  • Ability to provide clinical support and cover staff for lunches, breaks or patient assignments when needed. 
  • Collaborate with the Nurse Navigators in the surgical clinic to maximize OR efficiency and block utilization. 
  • Responsible for tracking and trending performance metrics for efficiency with on time starts, room turnover and length of stay. 
  • Collaborate with the Director for quality and safety metrics such as SSI bundle metrics, Time Outs, Debriefs, documentation accuracy and process improvements.

Qualifications 

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing; BSN preferred
  • Possess or eligible for a current Arizona Registered Nurse License
  •  ACLS certification required
  • AORN certified
  • Prior Circulating Nurse experience includes multiple specialties (Ortho, pain, endoscopy, general surgery, total joints, robots, new technology). Scrub role familiarity a plus. 
  •  Leadership/supervisor experience with successfully growing a surgical team. 
  • Experience with managing staff assignments, staff scheduling, vacation planning, and forecasting staffing needs to align with the surgical block schedule. 
  • Experience with oversight for resource coordination including staffing, vendors, equipment (C-arm, ortho devices, robot). 
  • Experience with patient progression in the surgical environment to expedite patient progression from pre-op to OR and PACU care. 
  • Excellent communication and delegation skills to foster service excellence. 

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions 

Frequent standing, stooping, bending, stretching, squatting; must be able to stand/walk for up to 70% of the work day; must be able to lift , transfer, turn and position residents weighing up to 125 lbs. unassisted, or with the assistance of one for a resident weighing over 125 lbs. May be subjected to offensive odors and combative behavior. Must be able to lift and carry up to 20 lbs. frequently and 50 lbs. occasionally. May be exposed to communicable diseases including the HIV and HBV viruses. Must be able to work paying close attention to detail with frequent interruptions.
