About the Department

The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), a six-time National Recreation and Parks Association Gold Medal Award Winner, is currently seeking enthusiastic applicants who enjoy working with teens, pre-teens and young adults to be Safe Summer Program Staff. M-NCPPC is a bi-county agency serving a diverse population of approximately 2 million residents within Montgomery and Prince George's County.

Summer recreation jobs offer invaluable skill-building, leadership, training, and enrichment opportunities. Recreation work experiences allow you to learn and develop management and personnel skills which can enhance your job marketability. 

Safe Summer is a late-night summer recreation program that offers extended community center hours (up to midnight for teens, pre-teens and young adults who are Prince George’s County residents, ages 10-24 years old. This program runs from June to August at multiple locations and community centers throughout the county. Safe Summer offers recreation, safe spaces, and positive youth development for participants.

Position Duties

Candidates are responsible for the overall supervision of the Safe Summer program for participants ranging in ages 10-24 years of age and the operation of a comprehensive program. Duties include training, supervising and evaluating staff and volunteers, providing supervision to program participants, and evaluating programs and special events. 

All Safe Summer program staff are required to attend pre-service training and obtain a CPR and First Aid certification prior to the beginning of the program. Staff will assist in implementing, participating in and evaluating Safe Summer programs and special events. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be 21 years of age with a demonstrated desire to actively support positive youth development. 
  • Background in working with teens and pre-teens in recreational settings is a plus, but not a requirement. 
  • Evidence of responsible management, supervision and administrative experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. This combination should demonstrate an applicant's ability to direct and be responsible for a major program with minimal supervision. All selected candidates must display excellent customer service skills. 
  • College degree in appropriate field preferred but not essential.

May be subject to medical, drug and alcohol testing.

Since this is a summer only position, there is no paid vacation, holiday or sick leave. These positions are seasonal and do not include a benefits package. This position pays $21.75/hr dependent upon qualifications. A complete background investigation will be completed prior to hire.
