Job Purpose

Progress Rail's Signaling division is seeking a Test Engineering Intern to join our Independence, MO team for the summer of 2026. You'll help design, execute, and automate tests for railway signaling hardware and firmware — systems that keep trains running safely across the country. This role bridges hardware and software, giving you hands-on experience with test equipment, automation scripting, and validation processes used in safety-critical product development.

Key Job Elements

• Develop and execute test procedures for embedded hardware and firmware systems;
• Write automated test scripts in Python to streamline repetitive validation tasks;
• Set up and operate test equipment including oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, and data acquisition systems;
• Assist with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and system integration testing;
• Analyze test data, identify anomalies, and document findings in clear test reports;
• Help maintain and improve the team's automated test infrastructure;
• Collaborate with firmware and electrical engineers to understand requirements and resolve defects;
• Support environmental and compliance testing activities (temperature, vibration, EMC).

Qualifications and Experience

• Coursework or project experience in programming (Python, C, or similar);
• Basic understanding of electronics (voltage, current, digital/analog signals);
• Ability to follow and document detailed test procedures;
• Strong analytical mindset and attention to detail;
• Experience with Python scripting for test automation or data analysis;
• Hands-on use of lab equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, function generators);
• Exposure to test frameworks (pytest, unittest, or similar);
• Familiarity with serial communication protocols (UART, SPI, I2C, CAN);
• Experience with LabVIEW or National Instruments hardware;
• Interest in quality assurance, reliability, or safety-critical systems;
• Familiarity with Git version control.


Technical Skills
• Test Tools - Oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, logic analyzers, DAQ systems;
• Automation - Python scripting, pytest, CI/CD concepts ;
• Protocols - UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, RS-485, Modbus ;
• Software - Git, VS Code, Excel/data analysis tools;
• Standards Exposure | IEC 61508, EN 50128 (will learn on the job).
