Job Description

The Attendance Technician serves as the school division’s attendance officer, responsible for monitoring student attendance, addressing truancy, and supporting dropout prevention efforts. This role works closely with students, families, school staff, and court officials to ensure compliance with state attendance laws and division policies. The Attendance Technician promotes student engagement by identifying attendance concerns early and coordinating appropriate interventions.


 


Minimum Qualifications



  • High school diploma required; some college coursework preferred

  • Two (2) years of experience working with at-risk youth or in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Minimum of one (1) year of customer service experience

  • Valid driver’s license


Key Responsibilities


 


Attendance Monitoring & Compliance



  • Serve as the division’s attendance officer in accordance with state laws and regulations.

  • Monitor daily student attendance and identify patterns of absenteeism and habitual truancy.

  • Review and reconcile attendance data to ensure accuracy and compliance with established procedures.

  • Generate and maintain attendance reports for school staff and administrators.


Truancy Intervention & Case Management



  • Schedule and facilitate attendance conferences with students, parents, and school staff.

  • Communicate with parents and guardians regarding excused and unexcused absences.

  • Conduct home visits for students with chronic absenteeism or truancy concerns.

  • Participate in dropout prevention efforts and intervention planning.


Legal & Court Coordination



  • Serve as the school division representative with parents, students, and court officials regarding attendance matters.

  • Interpret and explain applicable attendance laws, regulations, and procedures to families and staff.

  • Prepare and present required documentation to Juvenile and Circuit Court systems.

  • File petitions in cases of non-compliance with state attendance requirements.

  • Maintain accurate and lawful documentation in support of court proceedings.


Data Management & Reporting



  • Input, retrieve, and maintain attendance data using the student information system.

  • Prepare attendance summaries, reports, and required documentation.

  • Ensure confidentiality and security of all student records and information.


Collaboration & Professional Responsibilities



  • Attend regular prevention meetings with court and community partners.

  • Collaborate with school staff, administrators, and student support personnel to address attendance concerns.

  • Maintain punctual and consistent attendance.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support division and school operations.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities



  • Knowledge of student attendance laws, regulations, and truancy procedures

  • Ability to interpret and apply policies and legal requirements

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, particularly in sensitive situations

  • Ability to work effectively with students, families, school staff, and court officials

  • Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills

  • Ability to manage multiple cases and prioritize tasks effectively

  • Proficiency in computer systems and data management tools

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment


Working Conditions and Physical Requirements



  • Work is performed in school settings, offices, and community locations.

  • Duties require travel for home visits and court appearances.

  • Duties require walking, standing, bending, and driving as part of daily responsibilities.

  • Work involves exposure to normal day-to-day conditions and routine risks associated with school and community environments.


Supervision & Reporting


The Attendance Technician reports to the Senior Coordinator On-Time Graduation and Student Engagement and performs duties in accordance with division policies, procedures, and applicable laws.
