Job Description

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:
The position of Mill Floor Operator is responsible for the following:
1. First and foremost, working safely. Keeping yourself and the people working around you
safe is top priority for the Hot Mill. Safety is everyone's responsibility.
2. Inspections and daily checks of the machinery associated with the Mill Bay in the Flat
Products Hot Mill. This includes the equipment and operation of the Furnace Discharge,
Hot Scale Breaker, Roughing Mill, Crop Shear, Finishing Mill, Downcoiler and Plate
Line. The Floor Operator works at the floor level in order to obtain the proper levels of
quality and productivity.
3. Recording equipment readings and monitoring the auxiliary equipment that is located in
the Mill Bay. This includes the hydraulic and lubrication systems that feed the machines
listed above.
4. Quality inspections of the hot strip, which is done by stopping the end of a finished coil
on the roll line prior to it being coiled. The Floor Operator will visually inspect the strip
for defects, as well as checking the strip dimensionally.
5. Daily operation of mobile equipment, predominately overhead cranes and fork trucks.
6. This role is expected to have a strong work ethic, show a willingness to learn, be able to
take direction and communicate clearly, work well independently and on teams, think on
your feet, routinely demonstrate initiative, have the desire to advance to a leadership role.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Daily monitoring, inspections, and operation of the Furnace delivery, HSB, Roughing
Mill, Crop Shear, Finishing Mill, Downcoiler and plate line equipment at the floor level
utilizing all applicable work instructions.
2. Complete Roughing Mill, Finishing Mill, and Downcoiler check lists minimum of once
per shift, notifying proper personnel of any abnormalities or problems.
3. Complete hydraulic and lubrication check list minimum of twice per shift, notifying
proper personnel of any abnormalities or problems.
4. Perform visual scale pit pump checks minimum of once per shift.
5. Perform the down coiler pinch roll inspection/grinding every campaign or as required.
6. Changing roughing mill work rolls and back-up rolls and inspecting inside roughing mill
housing at specified intervals.
7. Changing roughing mill wipers, roll cooling nozzles and descaling nozzles.
8. Changing finishing mill work rolls and back-up rolls and inspecting inside finishing mill
housing at specified intervals.
9. Changing finishing mill wipers, roll cooling nozzles and furnace coiler site glasses as
necessary.
10. Operating torches, oxy-acetylene and plasma, for scrap cutting and handling.
11. Perform automatic banding machine and coil marking checks and maintenance as
required, including replacement of banding material, and clips, and tags.
12. Perform strip inspection and dimensional checks as required.
13. Operating overhead crane and fork truck for functions such as moving finished product,
dumping crop buckets, rejecting slabs, removing defective material from machine,
cleaning out scale pits, loading/unloading operational materials, and moving equipment
around the Mill Bay, as required.
14. Perform crane inspections daily.
15. Take inventory or plate, scrap, and spare parts as required.
16. Properly identifying coils and plates.
17. Assist Furnace Entry with Slab Receiving and Campaign marking when needed.
18. Maintaining good house-keeping on a daily basis, as well as house-keeping and
maintenance work as assigned.
19. Follow all work instructions, guidelines, and safety rules given by North American
Stainless.
20. Complete finishing mill check list minimum of once per shift, notifying proper personnel
of any abnormalities or problems.
21. Complete down coiler check list minimum of once per shift, notifying proper personnel
of any abnormalities or problems.
22. Scrap cutting and handling.
23. Change automatic bander material as required.
24. Perform all required checks on the coil marking machine.
25. Dumping crop buckets as required.
26. Clean out scale pits as required.
27. Clean cameras as required.
28. Reject slabs as required.
29. Assist operators with cobble clean up.
30. Load/unload operational material as required.


SUPPLEMENTAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Other duties as assigned
2. Participation in relevant continuous improvement programs.


MINIMUM EDUCATION, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of High School Degree or Equivalent (GED), basic computer skills, and strong
communication skills.


PHYSICAL ABILITIES REQUIRED:
• Mobility in plant
• While performing the duties of (this job), the employee is regularly required to sit, stand,
walk, etc.
• The employee is frequently required to make use of their hands for technical tasks
• The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
• Visual ability with or without correction
• Communication abilities


HEALTH AND SAFETY:

3. Report the absence of or defect in any protective equipment or clothing to the Supervisor
or Manager immediately
4. Use or wear the equipment, protective devices or clothing that is required to be used or

Some areas may require additional personal protective equipment such as:
e. Respirators; the respirator requires you to be clean shaven in order to comply with
company policies and procedures as well as OSHA Regulations.
f. Fire Retardant clothing
g. Acid PPE
5. Report to the Safety Coordinator, Group Lead or Supervisor any contravention of the
Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations or Company policy
6. Must follow all Lock out Tag out (LOTO) guidelines for designated machines
7. Must follow all Environmental Policies and Regulations
8. Maintain a clean and safe work area
