Description
The Emergency Room Technician provides direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of the Emergency Room Registered Nurse and Physician. This role assists with patient assessment, basic clinical procedures, and emergency interventions to ensure safe, efficient, and compassionate care delivery. The ER Technician supports department operations by maintaining equipment, supplies, and a clean, organized environment while adhering to hospital policies, safety, and quality standards.
Requirements
· High school diploma or equivalent required
· Current Wyoming EMT-Basic or Paramedic certification required
· BLS required upon hire
· ACLS and PALS required within 90 days of hire
Summary
· Assists nursing and medical staff with emergency patient care, including vital signs, patient positioning, transport, and basic clinical procedures within scope of practice.
· Supports the rapid triage and rooming process, assisting with patient intake, initial data collection, and preparation for the medical screening exam.
· Performs point-of-care testing (POCT), including glucose monitoring and specimen collection, ensuring accurate labeling and timely delivery to the laboratory.
· Assists with procedures such as wound care, splinting, EKG acquisition, cardiac monitoring, oxygen setup, and other interventions within scope and competency.
· Responds promptly to codes, trauma activations, and emergency situations, assisting with resuscitation efforts, equipment setup, and patient stabilization.
· Prepares, cleans, and restocks exam and trauma rooms between patients to support efficient patient throughput and minimize delays in care.
· Maintains department readiness by ensuring equipment (e.g., stretchers, suction, monitors) is functional, stocked, and readily available, reports malfunctions promptly.
· Provides safe and efficient patient transport within the department and to ancillary services, maintaining patient safety and dignity.
· Assists with patient admissions, discharges, and transfers, ensuring timely movement of patients and clear communication with the care team.
· Maintains accurate, timely, and complete documentation of tasks performed and observations in accordance with hospital policy and regulatory standards.
· Adheres to infection prevention protocols, including proper use of PPE and safe handling of biohazard materials, with special attention to aerosol-generating procedures and high-risk exposures.
· Supports compliance with EMTALA requirements, ensuring all patients receive appropriate assistance during the medical screening and stabilization process.
· Assists in maintaining a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff, including de-escalation support and awareness of patient safety risks.
· Demonstrates flexibility in supporting department operations, including assisting in overflow areas or inpatient units as needed within scope and competency.
· Maintains professional conduct, communication, and appearance consistent with the facility’s Standards of Behavior.
· Participates in training, competency validation, and quality improvement initiatives as assigned.
· Performs other duties as assigned.
