Job Description:

The Roadway Design Division at the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is seeking a Professional Engineer to lead an in-house team of engineers and designers and manage design efforts for two of our eight districts. You will obtain vast experience with different types of design work since District Two is located on the eastern side of the State and encompasses the Omaha Metro area and District 5 is located in the Panhandle for the State of Nebraska.

Pay range is $40.990 -$60.425 per hour. The pay rate may be commensurate with education and/or experience within fiscal constraints if approved.


 

Job Duties:

  • Manage and review preliminary and final construction plans, special provisions, and plan quantities for completeness and accuracy, and to ensure standards and specifications are met.
  • Make decisions and provide oversight, guidance, and direction as needed or required on highway projects to keep them on schedule.
  • Coordinate highway projects with other divisions, FHWA, outside agencies, municipalities, counties, legislatures, media, property owners and other interested parties.
  • Prepare for and participate in public meetings, hearings, field reviews, and coordination of meetings that would assist in the preparation of a project plan.
  • Be responsible for monitoring project schedules and updating the Clarity Scheduling System.
  • Administer personnel actions including selection, discipline, performance, leave, work schedules and assignments.
  • Prepare project related documents, reports and agreements with local governments and agencies.
  • Manage assigned projects to ensure that they meet the standards, are buildable, understandable, accurate and on time.
  • Provide leadership to staff to become successful and productive in developing their quality product.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


 

Requirements / Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline and one year of experience performing professional level engineering assignments. Must possess a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license at the time of application and be licensed by the Nebraska Board of Engineers and Architects at time of employment or be able to obtain such license within 90 days of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Experience in MicroStation, ORD and PC based drafting, roadway, earthwork, drainage and word processing and spreadsheet programs.
  • Previous design management experience including providing direction, analyzing and reviewing design plans, interpreting manuals, and applying standards, policies and procedures.
  • Experience and knowledge in the design of highways, streets, culverts, and storm sewers.
  • Proven management and supervisory experience.

Other:

  • Must have a valid driver’s license or ability to provide independent authorized transportation.
  • Must be available for out-of-town and occasional overnight travel.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of NDOT’s policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of NDOT’s computer systems and networks.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), MicroStation and ORD computer systems or similar.
  • Knowledge of highway design criteria, policies and standards related to roadway design.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Strong public relations skills.
  • Organizational skills to prioritize, organize and plan ahead to meet challenge in achieving the goals of project delivery.
  • Ability to lead change, lead people and build a cohesive team environment.
