Assists with performing general mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel powered equipment, construction, tractor, and maintenance equipment for City departments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
· Assists with general mechanical overhaul and repair work on automobiles, light, heavy and refuse trucks, motor graders, front end and hydraulic system loaders, rollers, sweepers, mowers and other mechanical equipment owned by the City.
· Adjusts and replaces units and parts including valves, pistons, rings, main bearing assemblies, engines, cooling, fuel, and exhaust systems.
· Assists in regular routine maintenance on cars and trucks such as checking, repairing, and replacing brakes, lights, fuel pumps, carburetors, changing oil, oil filters, thermostats, hoses, and tires.
· Performs arc, cutting, and brazing welding to fabricate some parts.
· Performs other tasks such as sweeping and keeping shop area clean, take parts inventory, order or obtain parts, answer phone, give information, make sure equipment is operating correctly after repair.
· Assists other Public Works departments on an as-needed basis including, but not limited to snow removal.
· Other duties as assigned.

Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
· Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment in vehicle repair field, operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines; hydraulic systems in light and heavy equipment; ability to keep records; operate snow removal equipment.
· Must have the ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize workload in a timely and effective manner.
· Must be able to communicate effectively using both written and oral methods.
Education and Experience
· Must possess High School Diploma or equivalent.
· Must have completed courses in automotive repair and welding (arc & co2) or have applicable experience.
· Must possess and maintain a valid Iowa Class A CDL with Tanker Endorsement.
· Must have a minimum of two years of experience doing mechanical repair work on gasoline and/or diesel powered equipment in a shop setting.
Physical, Mental, and Visual Effort
· Requires coordination of manual dexterity and normal visual and mental attention; work involves irregularities and difficulties particularly in winter, must apply various methods and techniques.
· Considerable physical effort with average to heavy items and equipment (changing truck tires) and in varied positions; walks, stands, sits, stoops, bends, reaches.
· Probable damage to equipment or operating equipment is moderate; errors not difficult to detect and work usually not checked by others.
· Regularly communicates with others through speaking and listening.
· Requires close vision and the ability to adjust focus; also requires some distant vision.
Working Conditions
- Regularly works both indoors and outdoors, extreme temperatures, noise, and smells.
- Exposed to cold, ice, and snow during winter months; exposed to fumes and dusty conditions.
- Exposed to minor injuries and accidents; subject to cuts, bruises, and abrasions.
