Job Description

Position Overview

“Electronic & Information Technology (EIT) Accessibility” is the practice of creating and maintaining electronic and information technology environments that enable individuals to access information, engage in interactions, and enjoy services regardless of disability status. The EIT Accessibility Analyst will serve as a strategic leader for the university, responsible for the development, management, oversight and governance of the University’s digital accessibility policy and associated procedures. This role is responsible for ensuring compliance with the EIT policy and related legal regulations, auditing existing and proposed digital content, providing education & training for others, and collaborating with campus stakeholders to ensure the accessibility of all aspects of university electronic information technology. 

 

Responsibilities 

  • Identification and adoption of accessibility standards for all aspects of EIT.

  • Creation and adoption of an EIT Accessibility Plan which includes:

    • A communication plan to promote and support a campuswide EIT accessibility program.

    • Procurement procedures to ensure all third-party products and sites are accessible. 

    • A workflow to evaluate and monitor accessibility for all EIT purchases and freeware.

    • Review of existing EIT to assess accessibility impacts and begin to bring it into conformance with adopted standards.

    • A process to ensure that all web pages and content published or utilized by the university, departments, programs, or units are in conformance with the adopted standards.

    • A method for training all appropriate University personnel on EIT accessibility and procurement.

    • A process for conducting periodic EIT accessibility reviews of university websites, programs, and services.

  • Creation and oversight of a method for training all appropriate University personnel on EIT accessibility and procurement

  • Creation and oversight of a process for conducting periodic EIT accessibility reviews of university websites, programs, and services

  • Creation and oversight of formal training for university faculty and staff who create or contribute to the creation or procurement of websites, software, applications, electronic course content, etc. 

  • Oversight of outside vendors performing digital accessibility work

  • Regular collaboration with and provision of guidance to various stakeholders on campus, including but not limited to: IT, Online Education & Educational Technology, General Counsel, & Faculty.   

  • Once the structure is in place for management, oversight, and accountability for EIT accessibility at the university, this position’s role may shift to include:

    • assisting other 3rd party entities in creating similar structures and processes

    • creating a process for Butler to contract VPAT reviews for 3rd parties

Required Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, User Experience, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field.
  • 2-3 years of experience working with accessibility and usability in a technological context.
  • Strong knowledge of Title III of the ADA and its regulations, particularly as they pertain to digital accessibility.
  • Experience with web accessibility and usability, ensuring compliance and ease of use.
  • Expertise in accessibility and usability of technology used in classrooms and laboratories, including devices and equipment.
  • Proven experience with testing and evaluating the accessibility of websites and other technologies.
  • In-depth understanding of key accessibility standards, including W3C’s WCAG 2.1, ATAG 2.0, UAAG 1.0, and WAI-ARIA 1.0, as well as MathML, WCAG2ICT, DAISY, EPUB 3, and successors.
  • Hands-on experience in accessible document development and remediation.
  • Proficient in using accessibility testing tools and screen readers such as JAWS, NVDA, TalkBack, and VoiceOver.
  • Strong understanding of reasonable modifications to policies and practices, including the procurement of assistive technologies and making security exceptions for their use.
  • Knowledge of various disabilities and their impact on digital access.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey accessibility concerns both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Exceptional writing skills to clearly document accessibility issues and solutions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, User Experience, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field (preferred).

  • Proven project management experience with a demonstrated ability to lead and execute projects successfully.

  • Exceptional organizational skills and a keen eye for detail.

  • Strong initiative and self-motivation with the ability to independently plan, coordinate, and execute tasks while collaborating effectively with campus stakeholders and departments.
