Wolfgang Confectioners is seeking an experienced Controller to lead our accounting operations and provide strategic financial leadership for our growing food manufacturing company. Reporting directly to the VP of Financial Services, the Controller will oversee all accounting functions, ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting, and drive continuous improvement in financial processes. This role is critical in supporting our company's growth objectives while maintaining strong internal controls and compliance standards.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Compliance
- Prepare and deliver accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP
- Manage the month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring timely completion and accuracy
- Coordinate annual financial audits and tax filings, serving as primary liaison with external auditors and tax advisors
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local financial and tax regulations
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls and accounting policies to safeguard company assets
Manufacturing & Cost Accounting
- Oversee cost accounting operations specific to food manufacturing, including standard costing, variance analysis, and inventory valuation
- Ensure accurate tracking of raw materials, work-in-progress, and finished goods inventory
- Collaborate with operations to analyze production costs, identify cost-saving opportunities, and improve margins
- Monitor and report on key manufacturing metrics including cost per unit, waste, and production efficiency
Financial Planning & Analysis
- Partner with FP&A to develop annual budgets, forecasts, and long-range financial plans
- Provide financial insights and analysis to support strategic decision-making
- Prepare management reports and dashboards for ownership and executive leadership
- Analyze trends, variances, and business performance against budget and prior periods
Team Leadership & Development
- Directly manage and develop Cost Accountant, and Accounts Payable Clerk
- Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and professional development
- Provide coaching, training, and performance feedback to direct reports
- Build and maintain a high-performing accounting team
Systems & Process Improvement
- Evaluate and optimize accounting systems and processes to improve efficiency and accuracy
- Lead implementation of system upgrades or new financial software as needed
- Develop and document standard operating procedures for accounting functions
- Drive automation initiatives to streamline workflows
Cash Management & Working Capital
- Monitor cash flow and working capital requirements
- Oversee accounts payable processes to optimize payment terms and maintain vendor relationships
- Support treasury functions including banking relationships and cash forecasting
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
CPA certification or active pursuit of CPA designation
Minimum 7-10 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role
Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting requirements
Experience in manufacturing environment, preferably food manufacturing or CPG industry
Demonstrated expertise in cost accounting, inventory management, and variance analysis
Proficiency with ERP systems and advanced Excel skills
Proven ability to manage month-end close and financial reporting processes
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
Excellent communication skills with ability to present financial information to non-financial stakeholders
Experience managing and developing accounting staff
Preferred Qualifications
MBA or Master's degree in Accounting
Experience with food manufacturing regulations and compliance requirements (FSMA, FDA, USDA)
Knowledge of private equity or privately-held company financial reporting
Experience with financial systems implementation or upgrades
Background in process improvement methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma)
Experience supporting M&A activities or business integration
