Job Description

JOB PURPOSE AND REPORTING STRUCTURE:

Under the direction of the supervisor, the OD/ID Grinder A sets up and operates manual cylindrical grinders to grind external surface of products according to specified material characteristics and company quality standards as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Includes the following, other duties may be assigned.

  • Plan sequence of steps to achieve final outcome and desired product dimensions.
  • Position, align and secure machine parts in machine; set up c fixtures.  Work with pieces having some shoulders, steps, and/or tapers.
  • Select grade of abrasive wheel according to specifications, knowledge of abrasives, and condition of metal, and attach to grinder.  Determine machine speeds, feeds and stops for standard operations.
  • Program and set up CNC OD/ID grinders according to blueprint specifications and knowledge of the grinding process. 
  • Operate grinder; make adjustments as needed.  Add a flow of coolant to process to maintain the proper temperature of the work piece.
  • Use indicator, micrometer, vernier calipers, and various precision measuring equipment to set up and check dimensions and contours.  Examine and feel surface of work piece for defects.
  • Maintain equipment and machines; perform preventive maintenance as needed.
  • Process all necessary documentation and paperwork for parts completed. 
  • Train and guide assisting personnel on the grinding process.
  • Follow all clean up and housekeeping procedures.  Comply with all quality and safety regulations.
