Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on various diesel and gasoline vehicles or equipment which may range from public safety vehicles, cars, trucks, buses, or equipment.

- Conduct tune-ups and regular service checks, such as oil changes and fluid replacements.

- Replace, adjust and repair various key vehicle and/or equipment components which may include, but are not limited to, hydraulic systems, suspension parts, fuel, electronics and cooling systems, electronics, and brakes.

- Respond to road calls and provide on-site repairs for various vehicles and equipment.

- Assist mechanics with more complex engine repairs and overhauls.

- Diagnose minor defects and perform corrective actions to ensure vehicle reliability.

- Complete daily reports and use computer software for basic data entry and record-keeping.

- Possess knowledge of specialized tools, vehicle and equipment maintenance principles.

- Operate vehicles and equipment safely.

- Performs other related duties as assigned.


Duties and schedules may vary by assignment and/or department, please inquire about specific duties and/or schedules if called upon for an interview. Incumbents may be required to work any shift; nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.

The current vacancy exists in the Department of Transportation (FAX). However, this classification also exists in the General Services Department and Wastewater Division of the Public Utilities Department. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of three (3) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period at the City's discretion. If the examination process is suspended for this recruitment, the eligible list may be limited to three (3) months.


THE REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify for the examination and does not assure a place on the eligibility list.


Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent GED completion 

and


Two (2) years of full-time paid experience performing minor maintenance on vehicles and equipment.  Minor maintenance may include, but is not limited to the following tasks: performing regularly scheduled maintenance such as oil, filter, and fluid changes.


The work experience section MUST be completed with detailed duties, dates and weekly hours worked for each title held. Please SPECIFY TYPE OF MINOR MAINTENANCE, VEHICLES AND EQUIPMENT with which you have experience within your duties. Resumes will not be accepted in lieu of a completed employment application and will not be used to evaluate minimum requirements. An associate’s degree or certification of completion from a recognized vocational,

technical, or college program in automotive or heavy equipment technology may be substituted for one (1) year of experience. Applicants MUST ATTACH A COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS for education verification. Applications lacking the attachment may be rejected.


Special Requirements: 

Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s License is required at the time of application and must be maintained throughout the entire term of employment in this classification.  

Depending on assignment area, may be required to obtain, and maintain for entire term of assignment, a California Class B License with required endorsements and without airbrake restriction within the probationary period, or within twelve (12) months after being assigned to an area requiring such license.   


PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that are necessary to safely, effectively, and efficiently perform the essential functions of this job with or without reasonable accommodation. 


This classification’s physical demands involve heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally with assistance, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical demands may be required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, manual dexterity, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, walking


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS


The selected eligible candidates certified will be required to successfully pass a Department interview and a Department of Justice fingerprint prior to employment with the City of Fresno. 


Possession of a valid California Driver's License is required at time of appointment and during the entire term of employment in the job class. Candidates considered for hire will be required to provide proof of a valid driver's license and current copy of their driving record.


Some positions have been designated as being "safety sensitive" and require all eligibles offered employment to successfully pass a drug test prior to employment. Federal law requires that applicants for positions involving the operation of certain transit vehicles, revenue service vehicles, the transportation of hazardous materials, or heavy equipment over 26,001 pounds requiring a commercial driver's license, must undergo pre-employment drug testing as a condition of employment. This classification is subject to random drug and alcohol testing throughout entire term of employment in this class.


THE SELECTION PROCESS

The examination process may consist of the following:


Written Exam: 100% - A job-related written examination may be administered which may test a candidate in: proper use and identification of tools, equipment, terminology and diagnostics used in the less complex repair and maintenance of automotive light and heavy equipment; appropriate safety practices; basic mathematics or other topics related to a candidate's training, experience and qualifications for the position.   


Candidates must achieve a passing score in order to qualify for the eligible list. 


The Written Exam is tentatively scheduled for the week of June 8th, 2026.
