Job Description

About the Department

The Associate City Attorney is responsible for performing professional legal work on behalf of the City, its officials, and its employees.

Position Duties

  1. Reviews, investigates, and processes Freedom of Information Act requests using department software program.
  2. Reviews and processes damage claims and internal complaints in a timely manner and make a recommendation. 
  3. May review and authorize or deny criminal complaints and warrants (including on periodic virtual weekends).
  4. May assist with reviewing and/or drafting contracts, ordinances, resolutions, and other legal documents.   
  5. May provide legal advice to assigned department officials and employees.
  6. Assist with 67th District Court cases. 
  7. May assist with and/or conduct criminal, civil, and administrative litigation, on behalf of the City and its officials/employees, before local, state, and federal courts/agencies, including engaging in discovery, motion practice, trial, and appeals.
  8. Attends assigned meetings of City boards and commissions as legal counsel.
  9. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with court personnel, other City officials and employees, opposing counsel, and the general public.
  10. Performs other related duties as required. 

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Graduation from an accredited law school.
  2. License to practice law in the State of Michigan. 
  3. Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Michigan Driver’s License.
