    POSITION: Adapted Sports Coach- Internal 

    LOCATION:  District Athletics

    JOB SUMMARY:
    The Adapted Sports Coach is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing adapted athletic programs for students with disabilities within the Dougherty County School System (DCSS). This position advances DCSS's commitment to equity, access, and inclusive athletic programming by providing structured, competitive, and safe opportunities for participation in wheelchair handball, wheelchair basketball, and wheelchair football. The Adapted Sports Coach is expected to uphold DCSS Athletics standards, policies, and expectations while fostering a positive, student-centered environment that promotes skill development, sportsmanship, and teamwork.


    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    1. Must be a current Dougherty County School System employee;
    2. Experience supervising students in a school, athletic, or structured activity setting.

    SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  

    1. Ability to operate groundskeeping and maintenance equipment safely;
    2. Ability to lift, carry, and move equipment and materials as required;
    3. Ability to work a flexible schedule, as work hours may include early mornings, evenings;
    4. weekends, and holidays depending on athletic events and seasonal demands;
    5. Experience working with students with disabilities;
    6. Knowledge of adapted or wheelchair sports;
    7. Previous coaching or athletic program experience;
    8. CPR/AED and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).

       

    PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Plan, organize, and conduct practices and competitions for assigned adapted sports programs;
    2. Instruct student-athletes in sport-specific skills including wheelchair mobility, passing, shooting, ball handling, positioning, and game awareness;
    3. Utilize modified rules, adaptive equipment, and differentiated instructional strategies appropriate for students with disabilities;
    4. Ensure the safety and supervision of all student-athletes during practices, competitions, and related activities;
    5. Promote sportsmanship, teamwork, character development, and inclusive participation;
    6. Maintain accurate rosters, attendance records, and eligibility documentation in accordance with DCSS guidelines;
    7. Assist with scheduling, event coordination, and program communication as needed;
    8. Supervise student-athletes during transportation and dismissal in accordance with district procedures;
    9. Maintain compliance with all DCSS policies, procedures, and applicable state or governing body regulations;
    10. Complete required district trainings and maintain required certifications.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    1. Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift for extended periods;
    2. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds;
    3. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.



    REPORTS TO:  Adapted Sports Coordinator/Director of Athletics 

    SALARY RANGE:  Competitive salary and excellent benefits package, in accordance with the DCSS Compensation Guide.
