    Job Title:     Mechanic Exemption Status: Non-Exempt

     

    Reports to:  Fleet Manager Days: 260

     

    Dept./School:  Transportation Salary: Manual Trades 6

     

    POSITION SUMMARY:  

     

    Perform minor & major mechanical repairs with minimal supervision to ensure proper performance & safety of district vehicles. Work on projects as assigned, following established procedures. 

     

     

     

    MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: 

     

    Five years experience as a mechanic, school bus preferred, or med/heavy-duty truck mechanic.

     

     

     

    EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS:

     
    • High school diploma or GED from district approved entity

    • At least 2 of the ASE school bus certifications, T1-T6 or S1-S7, or demonstrate proficiency in these areas

    • Possess and maintain valid Texas Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A or B with passenger & school bus endorsements or willingness to obtain

    • Acceptable driving record as determined by the Texas Dept. of Public Safety (DPS)

    • Possess & maintain Texas school bus driver certification as mandated by the Texas DPS  

     

    SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE SKILLS:

     
    • Knowledge of diesel engine maintenance & repair, school bus preferred

    • Ability to diagnose mechanical problems & perform repairs independently

    • Ability to operate equipment & tools involved in vehicle repair

    • Ability to lift heavy equipment & vehicle parts necessary to perform job

    • Ability to pass annual DOT physical with alcohol & drug screen

    • Ability to pass criminal history background check

    • Ability to operate all types/models of school buses & other district owned vehicles & equipment

    • Computer experience with ability to operate & maintain vehicle maintenance software

    • Ability to utilize & access printed service material for additional information

    • Ability to perform mechanical repairs, preventive maintenance, inspections and tire repair on medium & heavy-duty commercial vehicles

    • Must furnish own tools

     

    RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

     
    • Performs routine checks, preventive maintenance, & repairs as needed

    • Maintains clean work bay & shop

    • Maintains safe work procedures

    • Keeps accurate records

    • Flexible in hours & job assignments

    • Drives bus routes as needed
