Job Description

The Regional Cancer Prevention, Risk and Diagnostic Assessment Program is responsible for performance monitoring for Cancer Care Ontario’s program and reporting of cancer prevention, screening, assessment and Indigenous services in the HNHB LHIN. The Regional Program includes delivery of smoking cessation program, Ontario Breast Screening Program High Risk (OBSP-HR), CIBC Breast Assessment Centre, Colposcopy Clinic, Cancer Risk Assessment Clinic and Indigenous services.


Registered Practical Nurses in the Colposcopy Clinic provide client centered care and practice according to the professional standards set by the College of Nurses of Ontario using the nursing process. Main nursing activities include assessment, anticipatory guidance, health teaching, patient advocacy, specimen preparation and collection and assistance with colposcopy procedures. The Colposcopy Clinic main nursing activities include assessment, counselling and providing health teaching on colposcopy procedures, cervical cancer risk factors, sexually transmitted infections, HPV prevention. The Colposcopy nurse will provide assistance to patients and clinicians during consultations, minor gynecological procedures; procedure and management of adverse events post procedure as well as room turnover, tray set-up. Performs other duties as assigned.

1. Current Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse
2. Current Certification in Asepsis, Medication Administration, CPR Basic Rescuer, current Certification in Laser Theory and Safety
3. Recent (with 2 years) experience with gynecological procedures in colposcopy setting.
4. Strong understanding of the Cancer Care Ontario’s Ontario Cervical Screening Guidelines, Cervical Cancer Diagnostic Assessment pathway and other gynecological cancers
5. Demonstrated competence in patient assessment, health teaching and patient counselling including Brief Cessation Intervention (BCI)
6. Demonstrated competence in applying principles of Universal Precautions and WHMIS
7. Demonstrated competence in using e-mail, database and appointment schedules software
8. Demonstrated ability to establish/maintain effective relationships as a member of the interdisciplinary health care team
9. Physically able to lift, bend, push, and push using good body mechanics
10. Recent experience with transfer and lift devices preferred
