Job Description
Title: Assistant Principal
Supervisor: Principal Alternative Learning Academy
Location: Alternative Learning Academy
Position Summary:
West Warwick Public Schools seeks an experienced educational leader to assume the
vital position of Assistant Principal for the school that serves as the WWPS alternative
learning program for middle and high school students. The candidate must possess
effective communication skills and demonstrate a commitment to a distributed
leadership model of management and instructional leadership, supporting the Principal
in all building-level functions.
Performance Responsibilities:
● Assist the Principal in articulating and implementing a vision for the alternative
school in West Warwick to meet the needs of all students.
● Support the Principal in building and improving the school’s culture, climate, and
instructional programs.
● Assist in managing the organization, operations, and available resources to
promote a safe, efficient, and effective learning environment.
● Support the implementation of clear instructional goals and specific achievement
objectives for the school.
● Ensure compliance with the framework of policies, laws, and regulations enacted
by local, state, and federal authorities.
● Coordinate program activities of staff and students in developing goals and
mission statements. Assist in facilitating change and innovation in the
instructional program.
● Participate in curriculum development efforts, clarify or interpret the educational
aims/objectives of the school program, and support the evaluation of the total
instructional program.
● Assist in the development and implementation of a Work-Based Learning
Program.
● Advocate and support the use of technology to change the delivery of instruction.
● Provide in-service staff development opportunities to address specific needs and
organize orientation programs for new staff.
● Assist in developing and implementing programs to meet the needs of at-risk
students.
● Special Student Populations (ESL, special education Title I students, and at-risk
students): Coordinate activities in the planning, organization, staffing, and review
of programs serving these special populations in the school.
● Work with middle and high school principals in coordinating and articulating
transition programs.
● Support the development, coordination, and implementation of the school’s
strategic plan in alignment with the District Strategic Plan.
● Oversee the organization and supervision of school-sponsored events within and
outside of the school.
● Support the Principal in assessing the effectiveness of the school’s programs

and preparing reports annually to the Superintendent of Schools and/or his/her
designee.
● Remain current on changes in local, state, and national education policy.
● Demonstrate a personal and professional code of ethics, values, beliefs, and
attitudes that inspire others to higher levels of performance.
● Treat people fairly, equitably, and with dignity and respect ethically.
● Protect the rights and confidentiality of students and staff.
● Assist the Principal in preparing the master schedules for students/staff and the
annual operating budget for the school.
● Perform technical/managerial duties necessary to the daily operations of the
school.
● Oversee the safety, cleanliness, and appearance for the entire school complex.
● Assist in influencing policy and implementing the same at the building level.
● Conduct building-level staff meetings as directed by the Principal.
● Communicate program progress, school programs, achievements, and special
events and activities.
● Collaborate with families and community members, responding to diverse
community interests and needs, and mobilizing community resources.
● Model integrity, fairness, and ethical behavior to help in the development of a
caring and supportive school community.
● Embrace diversity and gender equity in support of a multi-lingual, multicultural,
multi-social, and economically diverse community.
● Participate in district-wide initiatives, including those related to alternative
schools, management information, safety, teacher evaluations, and the School
Improvement Team.
● Perform any other duties as may be necessary from one’s own observation or as
directed by the Principal, Superintendent of Schools, and/or his/her designee.
Supervises and Evaluates:
● Assists the Principal in the supervision and evaluation of all personnel assigned
to the Alternative Learning Academy. Directly supervises assigned staff as
delegated by the Principal.
Minimal Qualifications:
● R.I. certification: Building Level Administrator PK- 12
● Master’s Degree
● Three years successful teaching experience
● Knowledgeable of the Rhode Island Special Education Referral to Placement
Process
● Knowledgeable of Multi-Tier System of Supports
● Knowledge and experience with educator teacher evaluation
● Demonstrated commitment and experience in the integration of technology in
instruction
● Supervisory/administrative experience in servicing students with Autism,
Developmental Disabilities, and Emotional Disturbance.
Term Of Employment:

● Work year with salary as determined by the West Warwick School Committee.
Evaluation:
● The Principal, Superintendent, or designee will complete an annual performance
evaluation.
