About the Department

EXAMINATION IS ANNOUNCED TO SUPPLEMENT THE EXISTING EMPLOYMENT LIST TO FILL TWO (2) CURRENT WEST JEFFERSON VACANCIES IN THE ANIMAL SHELTER.

This employment list will also be used for future EAST AND WEST Jefferson vacancies in this Departments as they occur.

Position Duties

The purpose of this position is to enforce animal control laws and ordinances while responding to the needs of animals in the community. Responsible for handling a variety of duties involving animals to include but not limited to rescuing, trapping, seizing, transporting, impounding. Check vaccination records, issue warnings, and summons. Attends legal proceedings, and must be able to communicate results to court officers or liaisons. Prepares investigative reports and performs property inspections. Enforces all animal control and anti-cruelty ordinances and statutes. Conduct daily patrols throughout the Parish. Responds to animal related emergencies. Impounds at-large dogs, cats, or other small animals. Rescues animals in distress. Investigates complaints of animal abuse, and enforces all animal control laws. Required to work scheduled stand-by in order to provide 24-hour service for seriously sick or injured strays and bring them to veterinarians for emergency treatment.  Employees may be required to successfully participate in a job-related training course of approximately 240 hours duration during their probationary period. The employee must be comfortable performing animal retrieval/rescue work around bodies of water and must be willing to participate in Slackwater Animal Rescue Training.  This position is an essential, emergency duty status worker and may not be relieved of duty when the Parish President or his designee recommends a voluntary or mandatory evacuation of Jefferson Parish.  Position requires driving of a Parish vehicle, thus possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record will be given preference.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; PLUS six (6) months of experience (paid or volunteer) in caring for and handling of animals in a facility such as animal shelter, veterinary clinic, pet store, research lab, or similar facility.

SUBSTITUTION: Successful completion of college coursework in animal health care, animal behavior or a related field may substitute for the above required experience.

The examination may consist of a written test, a rating of training and experience, an oral panel interview or any combination thereof. Acceptable applicants will be notified of the time, date, and place of any assembled testing. Applicants must supply complete and accurate information concerning their training and experience including a detailed description of their work experience, the names and addresses of all previous employers and the dates of employment. The information is subject to verification and the Personnel Department reserves the right to determine the quality and quantity of education and experience claimed for credit.
