Description

Summary

This is a general labor position with responsibility for installing permanent and temporary construction signage to assure traffic safety on County roads.  This position is under the direct supervision of the Right of Way Supervisor and/or his/her designee.

Definition and Examples of Work

Maintain traffic control through signage and markers

  • Perform skilled and semi-skilled duties involving the preparation, fabrication, installation and maintenance of traffic control devices.
  • Operate post drivers, post removers, surface grinding equipment, paint striping, and miscellaneous hand tools.
  • Determine proper distance, height and location of signage as regulated by the MUTCD.
  • Set up and remove barricades, cones, warning signs and any other traffic control devices as work requires.  Ensure traffic control complies with regulations set forth in the MUTCD.
  • Set up road counters and document results. 
  • Fabricate road name signs. 
  • Create various signs for Finney County; may include translation.
  • Set up and operate electronic message boards.
  • Respond to emergency calls regarding damaged or missing signage.
  • Maintain and update accurate records regarding traffic control inventory, routine maintenance, work performed, time and materials expended.
  • Meet with utility locators to determine underground utility locations before excavating for sign installation.
  • Meet with utility locators to determine underground utility locations prior to R&B projects and for project planning purposes.
  • Oversee sub-contractors involving traffic control devices and/or pavement markings.
  • Perform field studies and traffic engineering investigations per MUTCD for setting proper and legal speed limits.
  • Notify land owners of county road improvement projects that will affect county/private property lines and/or easements. 
  • Do field surveys to determine property/easement survey pins.
  •  Notify property owners for encroachment of fences, buildings and vehicles onto county rights of way.
  • Set up construction zones and flag traffic.
  • Maintains awareness of safety policies and procedures to ensure a safe work environment, including properly wearing and using personal safety equipment

Complete additional support functions for the unit

  • Serve as severe weather spotter during severe weather conditions.
  • Assist with road closures due to weather and/or accidents.

Additional duties may be assigned as business needs require.

Requirements

  • Excellent verbal and written English language skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to setup and operate traffic counters.
  • Ability to setup and operate electronic message board.
  • Ability to install signposts and secure signs to posts and supports.
  • Ability to utilize general construction hand tools and operate a sign machine.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Knowledge of use of general construction hand tools.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Ability to obtain CPR and First aid certifications
  • Ability to obtain Defensive Driving certificate 
  • Ability obtain flagger certification.
  • Occasional overtime

  • Regular and reliable attendance onsite
