GENERAL SUMMARY:
Saginaw Public Schools Career and Technical Education instructors are responsible for providing high-quality instruction to high school students in classroom and laboratory settings that help students develop the technical skills, safety habits, industry knowledge, and employability skills required for post-secondary education and careers in aviation, aerospace technology, unmanned aerial systems (UAS), and airport ground operations. The Aviation program prepares students for industry certifications and employment pathways through hands-on technical training, real-world projects, and partnerships with business and industry.

Physical Demands � While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, hear, and operate technical equipment and computers. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and conduct outdoor instruction. The employee may lift and/or move up to 50 pounds of equipment. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
(Other duties may be assigned)
1. Provides career and technical education (CTE) program instruction, program management, and curriculum development
2. Develops high-quality lessons and laboratory activities using real-world aviation applications and industry resources
3. Prepares students for industry certification and testing (e.g., FAA Part 107 and related credentials)
4. Maintains a current advisory committee involving business and industry partners
5. Provides leadership involvement with CTSO student organizations and competitions when applicable
6. Develops professional and post-secondary partnerships
7. Plans a program of study that meets individual student needs and abilities
8. Creates a classroom and lab environment conducive to learning and safety
9. Teaches and enforces aviation safety procedures and operational protocols
10. Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media
11. Assesses student progress and provides reports
12. Maintains accurate program documentation required by law and district policy
13. Coordinates work-based learning, job shadowing, and field experiences
14. Maintains equipment inventory and lab safety procedures
15. Communicates with parents and students regarding academic progress and career pathways
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: (varies depending on CTE program � Aviation/Aerospace Science Technology CIP 49.0101)
1. Valid State of Michigan Secondary Teaching Certificate with a Vocational/Occupational
Endorsement(s) or Authorization in Aeronautics/Aviation/Aerospace Science & Technology (CIP Code 49.0101)
OR
2. Standard/Professional CTE Certificate or Provisional/Professional Certificate in Aviation, Aerospace, Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), Airport Operations, Aircraft Maintenance, or closely related technical field
OR
3. Minimum of two years (4,000 hours) recent and relevant work experience in aviation, aerospace, drone/UAS operations, airport operations, aircraft maintenance, military aviation, or ground support operations to qualify for Annual Career Authorization
Additional Qualifications
4. FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification preferred (or ability to obtain within one year)
5. Pilot license, aviation maintenance certification, or other aviation industry credential preferred
6. Experience with flight simulation software, UAS platforms, or aviation technical equipment preferred
7. Ability to work with high school population including extracurricular activities and student
organizations
8. Ability to develop curriculum aligned to state-approved aviation standards
9. Ability to develop partnerships and advisory committee relationships
10. Previous experience with high school students preferred but not required
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Attend any training mandated by the State, FAA guidance, district, or building administrator.
Must follow all safety procedures for technical equipment and outdoor instructional activities.
Valid driver's license required.
WORKING CONDITIONS: (varies depending on CTE program)
School and lab environment including indoor and outdoor instructional settings.
Noise level may vary from moderate to loud depending on equipment in use.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, aviation publications, and governmental regulations.
Ability to write reports, correspondence, and instructional procedures.
Ability to effectively present information to students, staff, and industry partners.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and measurements and apply concepts of algebra, geometry, and technical measurement.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Ability to interpret technical diagrams and apply operational procedures.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid Driver's License required.
FAA certifications preferred.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
No direct supervision of district employees.
Responsible for direct supervision of students in classroom, laboratory, and outdoor instructional environments including aviation equipment operation, drone flight activities, and field-based learning experiences. The instructor is responsible for maintaining safety procedures, monitoring student conduct, and enforcing all district and program safety expectations during instructional activities. Instructor must maintain constant visual supervision of students during operation of unmanned aircraft systems, technical equipment, and any off-site or
field-based instructional activities.
FISCAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop and successfully maintain program budget
CURRICULA RESPONSIBILITIES:
Organize and implement an instructional program that prepares students to meet industry requirements for employment and continuing education in aviation and aerospace careers.
METHOD OF EVALUATION:
The Building Administrator evaluates this position every year. The evaluation form is available from the Human Resources and Labor Relations Department.
