Job Description

Under direction, to provide basic health services to students; to assist in the planning and implementation of school health programs in cooperation with medical authority and school administrative personnel; to evaluate the health status of students and the health service program; to provide instruction in health practices, first aid, child care, and other related subjects; to serve as a resource pertaining to student health management strategies, and welfare and atten­dance prob­lems and concerns; to facilitate the educational process by removing health related barriers to learning and to do other related func­tions as required.


 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES:


 



  • Participate in planning programs that eliminate or minimize health problems of students that may interfere with learning.

  • Initiate, maintain, and annually review student health records.

  • Assist with training and education of paraprofessionals in proper techniques for medical treatments or procedures. Keep documentation of training on file.

  • Identify health problems of students through health assessment, health histories, review of health records, and screening programs.

  • Implement all screening programs and prepare annual reports mandated by Indiana law including the following:

  • Vision: Grades 1, 3, and 8

  • Hearing: Grades 1, 4, 7, 10 (These may be done by a speech pathologist).

  • Scoliosis: Grades 5, 7, and 9. (Screen those currently in grades 6 and 8 with positive signs but not referred from the previous year’s screening.)

  • Communicate current health problems, needs, and concerns of students to their parents and appropriate school staff. 

  • Participate on the child study team: assist in the identification of students with disabilities and interpret health factors pertinent to the student’s disability.

  • Develop and maintain a system for providing first aid and emergency care.

  • Work with school secretary to administer medications and treatments to students per physician’s order and parent authorization.

  • Provide health counseling to students to assist them in making decisions regarding their health and health behaviors.

  • Assist students and parents in identifying and utilizing available and appropriate community health resources.

  • Facilitate the attainment of students’ health needs by providing support to students and their families.

  • Provide educational opportunities for students to assist them in developing self-care skills to deal with health problems.

  • Provide consultation and assistance to teachers in their planning, implementation, and evaluation of health education units.

  • Provide in-service educational opportunities for school staff on health-related issues.

  • Collaborate with community agencies, health professionals, and school staff to identify the health needs, current and potential, of children and youth to facilitate school and community planning and intervention.

  • Assume responsibility for professional development.

  • Perform lice, scabies, and impetigo screening and provide assistance with treatment.

  • Work with school building administrators in collecting and maintaining immunization records and preparing the annual immunization report for the Indiana State Department of Health due November 1 each year.

  • Provide classroom instruction to students on health-related issues as specified by the Superintendent of Schools.

  • Fulfill any additional job requirements as specified by the Superintendent of Schools.
