Position Title: CDL Class A Truck Driver
Location: Prestressed Concrete, Newton, KS
Position Type: Full-Time
Description:
The CDL Class A Truck Driver will be responsible for transporting precast/prestressed concrete products and other materials to designated locations. This position requires strict adherence to safety protocols, excellent time management skills, and a commitment to customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate Class A commercial vehicles to transport precast/prestressed concrete products and materials safely and efficiently.
- Operate gravel/end dump style trailer to haul bulk materials including rock and sand (hauled separately as required).
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure vehicles meet safety and maintenance standards.
- Adhere to all federal, state, and local transportation regulations, including DOT requirements.
- Secure loads properly to prevent shifting or damage during transit.
- Perform securement tasks including throwing chains, chaining/strapping down precast products, and removing chains/straps at delivery locations.
- Prevent product damage by using proper securement techniques, edge protection, and blocking/dunnage when applicable.
- Load and unload bulk materials safely, including monitoring proper loading weight distribution and ensuring material is delivered to the correct location.
- Operate the trailer tarp system (roll/unroll, secure, and ensure tarp is properly fastened) to prevent debris loss and comply with roadway safety requirements.
- Deliver products to job sites or customers within scheduled timeframes while maintaining professional and courteous interactions.
- Communicate effectively with dispatch and project teams regarding schedules, delays, or delivery updates.
- Maintain accurate records of driving hours, mileage, and delivery details using electronic logs or manual systems as required.
- Responsible for picking up blast sand and transporting it to the plant for pumping into the aggregate silo.
- Perform minor vehicle maintenance or report maintenance needs to the appropriate personnel.
- Inspect securement equipment (chains, binders, straps, hooks) for wear/damage and replace or report unsafe equipment.
- Maintain cleanliness and safe condition of trailer and equipment, including removing excess debris/material buildup as needed.
- Comply with all safety procedures and company policies to ensure a safe working environment.
Qualifications:
- Valid CDL Class A license with a clean driving record.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience operating Class A commercial vehicles preferred.
- Experience hauling oversized or heavy loads is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of DOT regulations and transportation safety standards.
- Strong communication and time management skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and overnight stays, as required by delivery schedules.
- Commitment to maintaining a high standard of safety and professionalism.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull heavy objects (chains, binders, straps, and securement equipment), up to 50 lbs regularly.
- Ability to throw chains/straps over loads and perform repeated securement tasks throughout the shift.
- Ability to climb in and out of the truck cab and climb on/off trailer decks while maintaining three points of contact.
- Ability to bend, twist, reach, crouch, kneel, and use hand/wrist strength to tighten or release binders and straps.
- Ability to operate and secure the trailer tarp system (rolling/unrolling and fastening tarp) in various weather conditions.
- Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, rain, snow, and ice.
- Ability to sit for extended periods and safely operate vehicle controls for long durations.
- Ability to walk and maintain balance on uneven surfaces such as gravel yards, job sites, and trailer surfaces.
