Learning and Civic Engagement

The High Museum of Art’s Learning and Civic Engagement Department connects people with art and ideas to inspire better civic life. We activate the Museum’s collections and exhibitions with inclusive learning opportunities, and we collaborate to share creative practices alongside art and artists. Our work cultivates growth through inquiry and strengthens people’s connections with themselves, one another, and the wider world.

Summer Camp

The High Museum Summer Art Camp is a hands-on art day camp for children in rising kindergarten through rising eighth grade. Eight different week-long topics are available during the summer months providing age-appropriate art exploration and creation. Each week, more than 80 campers participate, with up to 15 dedicated camp staff implementing and supporting the program.

Teen Learning Council

The High Museum Teen Learning Council is a group of 15 high school students who share common interests in art and community engagement. The Teen Learning Council offers participants the opportunity to engage with art, culture, and history; develop workplace and team building skills; and learn about a range of professional options and career paths. The Teen Learning Council gets behind-the-scenes access to the Museum, assists with museum public programs, and learns about the Museum's exhibitions and collections.

This Role

The Camp and Teen Assistant supports the Summer Camp and Teen Learning Council programs in collaboration with the Camp Leader, Teen Learning Council Instructor, and Associate Manager of Public Engagement. The ideal candidate will have outstanding organizational skills, a friendly and energetic demeanor, and demonstrate a passion for working with people of all ages and from diverse backgrounds. The Camp and Teen Assistant is responsible for assisting the program leaders with their respective programs, including but not limited to participant supervision and mentorship, workshop/supplies management and upkeep, and administrative tasks where applicable.

Rate: $14 p/hr

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

Summer Camp (30%):

· Assists with supplies and inventory for camp, in collaboration with the Camp Leader and Assistant Camp Leader.

· Provides direct assistance with campers in workshops, during lunches and in galleries as needed.

· Assists with daily, weekly, and summer-long set-up, maintenance, and clean-up of camp spaces and supplies.

· Relieves and assists staff as needed for breaks, emergencies, tardies/absences, and when extra help is needed.

· Remains visible and accessible to staff, campers, and caregivers.

· Assists with daily drop-off and pick-up; ensures that all campers are delivered safely and accurately from caregiver to workshop.

· Clearly communicates with Camp Leadership.

· Other duties may be assigned.

Teen Learning Council (70%):

· Oversees workshop and material prep for Teen Learning Council.

· Oversees daily Teen Learning Council check-in and check-out.

· Mentors and guides Teen Learning Council members while maintaining a professional presence.

· Sets a good example for Teen Learning Council members in all areas, including professional appearance, punctuality, adherence to rules, and responsibility.

· Assists the Teen Learning Council Instructor in activities, break-out sessions, and discussions. Aids in facilitating projects, gallery exploration, and brainstorming sessions.

· Other duties may be assigned.

Additional dates may be scheduled for prep, set-up, and clean-up.

Qualifications:

· High school graduate; current undergraduate studies in visual art and/or education preferred.

· Previous experience working with children required, 1-2 years working in youth camp or class environment preferred.

· Demonstrated experience teaching or working administratively within camps, youth classes, and/or out-of-school programming for children

· Demonstrated experience in customer service
