General Description
The primary responsibilities of the Facilities and Grounds Director include the planning, coordinating and executing the daily operations of the state 4-H center, Rock Springs Ranch. This position is a 6 month contract with the potential for renewal. This position works collaboratively across all departments including, but not limited to, programming, housekeeping, food service, and guest services. Priority projects include maintenance and oversight of buildings, water systems, vehicles, and grounds. With over 15,000 youth and adult guests visiting annually, the Facilities and Grounds Director ensures that every guest experience is rooted in safety, excellence, and hospitality.
The Kansas 4-H Foundation is the 501(c)(3) fundraising arm for Kansas 4-H, the state’s largest positive youth development program, as well as Rock Springs Ranch, the state 4-H camp and conference center. The Foundation works with businesses, organizations, individuals and families who share a common desire to support a statewide effort of growing future leaders. Rock Springs Ranch is a 735-acre property located in the heart of the flint hills just 10 miles south of Junction City, Kansas, and is accredited by the American Camp Association.
Primary Responsibilities:
Field Work
Leads and participates in the assessment and execution of daily facilities and grounds operations, ensuring high standards of safety, functionality, and appearance.
Ensures all maintenance work is completed efficiently and to a high standard, within assigned timeframes, while supervising and supporting staff performance.
Maintains all equipment and machinery in safe working condition and oversees training and proper use of tools and supplies.
Coordinates internal staff and outside vendors to maximize productivity and meet operational needs, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call coverage.
Acquires and maintains required licensure for fresh water and wastewater distribution systems in accordance with State of Kansas guidelines.
Safety & Compliance
Catalogs and prioritizes maintenance needs in collaboration with the Executive Director
Utilizes personal protective equipment (PPE) as required for the job at hand.
Ensures the facility is in compliance with local and state guidelines and any respective accreditation standards; obtains appropriate licenses, permits, and approvals as needed.
Maintains the current list of MSDS sheets.
Administrative
Demonstrates professionalism and customer service in all interactions with internal staff, external partners, and guests.
Collaborates effectively with Rock Springs Ranch team members to plan and implement Facilities & Grounds projects.
Represents the Facilities department in cross-departmental meetings and contributes to organizational planning efforts.
In partnership with the Executive Director, develops and refines operational workflows, preventative maintenance systems, and project planning processes.
Maintains accurate records of equipment serviceability and manages inventory to ensure necessary supplies are available.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Requirements
High School diploma or equivalent.
Three or more years experience in facilities operations, management, or related fields.
Must be willing to relocate on-site or live within 20 miles of Rock Springs Ranch.
Water Operator License (or ability to obtain within 12 months).
Current driver’s license and have/maintain a good driving record.
Have a basic understanding in the following areas:
Auto mechanics (including small engine)
Construction
Electrical
Plumbing
HVAC
Welding
Successful completion of criminal background check and drug test.
Able to lift 50 lbs. and carry 25 feet and place on a shelf.
Current local and/or state licenses, as required.
Required Qualifications
Minimum of 3 years of experience in facilities operations, management, or a related field.
Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing priorities.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and consistently meet deadlines.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work effectively in periodically stressful and challenging conditions.
Proficiency in computer applications such as Gmail, spreadsheets, and Google Docs.
Preferred Qualifications
Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in a facilities or maintenance role.
Demonstrated creativity, enthusiasm, and dedication in previous positions.
Proven ability to independently prioritize workload in dynamic and fast-paced environments.
Compensation
$60,000 to $68,000 annual salary (depending on experience)
Private onsite housing option, utilities and meals provided when group is on site
