Job Description

Job Title: GIS Technician

Closing Date: Position will remain open until filled

Salary: $39,850 - $61,622 Annually (DOQ)

Salary ranges listed above are evaluated in regards to relevant years of experience and education to determine fair and equitable pay. This is a full time exempt position.  MAPA reserves the right to hire at an appropriate level.


The Metropolitan Area Planning Agency (MAPA) is seeking resumes from qualified candidates to support GIS mapping, data management, and geospatial analysis efforts across a variety of regional planning, transportation, and community development projects. This position will assist in maintaining GIS datasets, producing mapping products, and supporting internal staff and partner agencies with geospatial information. This position plays an important role in supporting data-driven decision-making across a growing and evolving region. 



This is an entry-level professional role ideal for someone with foundational GIS experience who is looking to grow their skills in a collaborative public-sector environment. Work is performed under the supervision of the GIS Coordinator. 



A successful candidate will be technically capable, detail-oriented, and highly organized with strong communication skills. The candidate must be self-motivated, able to work both independently and collaboratively, and possess strong interpersonal skills to effectively interact with staff, partner agencies, and the public.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and update GIS datasets using Esri software (ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online).
  • Perform GIS data entry, verification, maintenance, and basic spatial analysis.
  • Create and update digital maps, graphics, and supporting documentation for a variety of projects.
  • Conduct data research and assist with interpreting and validating geospatial information.
  • Respond to GIS and mapping requests from staff, partner agencies, and the public.
  • Assist in preparing materials for planning efforts, reports, and public meetings.
  • Provide basic user support and assistance with GIS applications.
  • Coordinate with staff to support transportation, land use, and community planning initiatives.
  • Provide staff support on various projects, meetings, and collaborative efforts.




Requirements Include

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • Familiarity with Esri products including ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
  • Basic understanding of cartography and spatial data management.
  • Ability to collect, organize, and analyze geospatial data.
  • Ability to create clear and accurate maps and visualizations.
  • Ability to communicate technical information effectively to a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize work, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, partner agencies, and the public.



Education and Experience: 

Any combination of training, education, and experience that would provide the required skills, knowledge, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be: Bachelor’s Degree in geography, GIS, planning, computer science, or a related field and one year of experience using GIS software such as ArcGIS Pro (or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience).

MAPA is the Council of Governments serving a six-county region (Cass, Douglas, Sarpy and Washington Counties in Nebraska and Mills and Pottawattamie Counties in Iowa). MAPA performs work related to planning, community development, and transportation and other issues of regional significance.
