Duties and responsibilities:

  1. *Oversee the Center in the area of applied empirical methods, in particular the use of innovative data analytic strategies (including geospatial analysis) and visualization to social science research, policy analysis, and program evaluation activities relating to family well-being in Hawaii.
  2. *Implement, and oversee maintenance and updating of websites, data dashboards, data repositories, and interactive maps/data visualizations. Ensure the security, and accuracy of associated data and written content.
  3. *Review, acquire, and process, large datasets for sociospatial and population research, needs assessments, and program/systems evaluations.
  4. *Perform and document routine data gathering tasks through automated processes, e.g., web scraping, data downloads, and indicator computation.
  5. *Keep abreast of technological and analytic changes in the field, pursue related professional development, and apply new ideas as appropriate.
  6. *Provide training and oversight to graduate assistants and project staff.
  7. *Provide training and consultation to faculty.
  8. *Collaborate on the development and writing of grant applications, reports, presentations, scholarly articles, and educational materials.
  9. *Oversee data-related activities across Center projects.
  10. *Collaborate on the strategic planning for the Center specific to planning data-related activities.
  11. Engage stakeholders, contractors, and owners of potential data sources.
  12. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in statistics, social science research methods, data analytics, geospatial analysis, or a related field and four (4) years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities in quantitative research methods; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  2. Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques in the area of applied data science as demonstrated by broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standards and evolving concepts, principles, and methodologies.
  3. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with data analytics.
  4. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
  5. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  7. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
  8. If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
  9. Considerable skills in inferential statistics, geospatial analysis, data visualization and/or website/dashboard development.
  10. Considerable skills in programming and scripting for data processing and automation using relevant applications (such as Python, R, JavaScript, ArcGIS, SQL, etc.).
  11. Demonstrated familiarity with AI applications.
  12. Demonstrated ability in technical documentation.
  13. Demonstrated ability to manage projects and deliver results on time and to specifications.
  14. Considerable ability to organize self and others and communicate effectively in person and in writing.



Desirable Qualifications

  1. Master's degree in statistics, social science research methods, data analytics, geospatial analysis, or relevant field.
  2. Track record of scholarly publications and/or grantsmanship.
  3. Strong track record of producing data-based reports for clients and products for community audiences.
  4. Relevant technical certifications.
  5. Track record of work that demonstrates understanding of Hawaii's social and policy context.
  6. Familiarity with a variety of state and national administrative and population datasets.
  7. Good working knowledge of state health, education, and human services systems.
